Warning About Working With Dewey
hello…I am not sure about housecat…all i can say is that the contract i signed was clean. i just arrived a week ago and Dewey signed me in one of the schools in Taichung for November. Adrian and Andrew have been very helpful including finding a place for me to stay. they were very accommodating and answered all my questions about the job before i even got here. their recruiters worked just fine with me even through email. i thought that I might not be able to expect the same thing when I get here in Taiwan…luckily i did and they gave me even more! I am not sure what you guys experienced with Dewey. all i can say is that their company is like any other recruiting business and education consultancy - the fact still remains that they provide us, teachers, with employment here and that is what’s important. we opted to come here so we have to face the inevitable. but I have not experienced a single hassle since i got here…thanks to Andrew and Adrian who helped me through…

I am now on vacay while waiting for my start date and enjoying my stay here…
Kamusta ka na?

Hamleintaiwan, I didn’t believe you but you are bloody right.

Not surprising really. They work for very little money and can search for sites all day.
It wouldn’t be that hard to get something ranking very well that would spill the beans on what Dewey has done.
That would at least provide people who are considering working with them some much needed information.
Dewey posted his ads under the same IP on my sites.

Guess what! The IP 58.71.7.98 posted the following.
Dear moderator:

I have only been in Taiwan for a short time, arrived a week ago and went through Dewey International. So far they have been really good! Contrary to what I have read, they have treated me nicely - even assisted me in looking for a place to stay. My agents, Adrian and Andrew have really been very very helpful and soooo accommodating. I could not complain because the school where they will endorse me by November has very good working conditions, as well as the place where I am staying now. Right now, I am having a swell time in Taichung! I hope to meet everyone here soon…GTG!
I let it pass through and gave it some comment. http://www.carookee.com/forum/Englishteachers/185/25313221

Does that look familiar?

He even used the same screen name.

Wait…so Andrew and Adrian aren’t Taiwanese but are in fact Filippino!!!

:roflmao:

I for one welcome [strike]Dewey[/strike] crimson69, and encourage more posts, I need more light entertainment relief in the afternoons.

Hilarious stuff… Keep us entertained Dewey!

Half price Cebu getaways while on vacay (maybe that is boracay?). That’s 0800 DEWEYSCREW apply now or go to 1stpostcompliment.com.ph

Love the name of this outfit, reminds me of the old joke about the law firm, Dewey, Cheatum, and Howe.
:roflmao:

A swell time? The last time I heard that expression was from watching Turner Classic Movies.

Who speaks like this nowadays?

Say, I wonder if the term ‘swell’ originates from the idea of something giving one an erection?

Well, considering that Dewey seems to f*** its contracted teachers, maybe we’ve come full circle here?

we haven’t even come close to full circle here. This isn’t going to phase Dewey at all. They still have a monopoly and there are still an endless number of teachers to fill those positions. The only person that is going to lose is housecat. But hopefully this just blows over but I really can’t see how that can happen at this point.

We are working on it and with a little willpower we can bring this one to fall.
Just give it a little time to understand what dewey actually does to run his business.

First of all he has some cheap labors in the Philippines and elsewhere to do the spamming. These spammers use names like Mickey/ Maria/ David/ Kevin etc. and post job ads regardless these jobs do or do not exist.
They will also disguise themselves as teachers and post things like this.

On my website esldewey and crimson69 use the same ip to make their posts. 58.71.7.98
So crimson69 is most likely esldewey who is not in Taichung instead he is in the Philippines with swellings on his fingers and a little pay.

Go to google and type esl dewey and go to this http://www.carookee.com/forum/Englishteachers/185/Information_about_ESL_Dewey.25313221.0.01405.html page to see the post in question.
If everyone does a little effort spreading the news about how they work it’ll catch up with them.

I think forumosa and my post are only 5 spots away from replacing his site for ESL dewey.

here is another ads site he posted as esldewey using this ip 58.71.7.98 http : //w w w. classifiedsforfree.com/details/185791663/urgent-esl-teaching-positions.htm

Housecat’s not going to lose either. Not working with Dewey any longer would hardly be considered a loss!

Oh, and Hamelet’s great post just explained why, whenever you call Dewey to ask about SPECIFIC jobs listed on their site or posted elsewhere, they’ll never give you a straight answer. Always, by the time you call, that job has been snapped up! Hot hot hot, I tell you. Such a swell bunch of people they must be! Apparently there are even teachers out there who love working with Dewey while on vacay in awsome Taichung!!

umm… yeah… okay…

you’re going to bring down Dewey with forum postings?

It’s not a big deal to lose your job and have a big portion of the public school teaching jobs unavailable to you because those jobs use Dewey as recruiters?

I applaud you for not willing to put up with shit but I see this as a shortsighted battle.

It is an inconvenience to me that that Dewey exists in the first place and a special irritation in particular that they have so much market coverage in the South, where I’d rather be. But if I want to work in a public school next year, I do still have other options.

I can talk with my current school, and current county government. I can use another recruiter. I can move north. Or I can do something else for a living next year, or I can go home or to another country. I can even take them to court/labor council and fight them, if I want.

You see, when Dewey decided to insist that I should pay fees for whatever school I work for (if that school doesn’t pay instead), they pretty much decided the call. One way or another, the one thing they’ve managed to do is cause me inconvenience. But once you HAVE to move again, then all bets are off and you may as well consider all your options and look at the good in things, no? Wherever I’ll be next year, I won’t have to work with Dewey!

There are other reasons, too, why this is not such a big deal for me at this time, one being the simple fact that I loathe my apartment and plan to move anyway. Also, like I said, I always have a plan B. I’m a single mom with little family or support. My eggs are rarely all in one basket!

I really only meant to sort of pun on the previous poster’s question about getting an erection. :unamused: Though “Dewey, Screwem and Howe” is definitely true in this case.

Has anyone thought of a concerted letter-writing campaign to the MOE and county governments? Newspaper editorials, taken from the perspective that this stranglehold is preventing the best possible education for Taiwan’s children? etc. etc.

Forget about your options for next year, my concern is that you might not make it to next month.

what does your Chinese contract say about this clause? I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s different than the one you previously signed. And they claim translation error.

I agree that you shouldn’t sign the contract but your first phone call escalated to verbal threats. And then you publicly slammed them on a popular forum that you know they read. There are better ways that this could have been handled imo.
