At the Taipei Hertz, you’d say xiǎojiě 小姐, “miss,” to get the attention of the young woman behind the counter. If you did the same thing in Beijing, you’d get slapped upside the head for calling her a prostitute.

Some issues with that article:
Napkin does not mean sanitary pad in the UK.
Retrofexes are dropped accross most of southern China.
Mainland Chinese refer to the language as Guoyu all the time.
Varieties of Taiwan versus Mainland vocab and phrases are generally understood perfectly well by both sides.
Xiaojie has connotations of prostitution in some situations, it does not mean prostitute.
