it seems i read in a post somewhere that most of the people who visit this site don’t speak english as their first language. when i try to go to all chinese language forums, my main problem is that the font is too small. maybe having all posts here in bigger font could help those readers who struggle with english. or could we use that function that i see when people post photos? these photos enlarge when the cursor is dragged over them. if it wasn’t too complicated, this site could be made even more useful for english learners by having a dictionary look-up function where you click on an english word and get the chinese equivalent for it. maybe those extras could be functions that people would have to pay for. my second suggestion is to have a book club forum where people suggest books to read. then those books become the basis of discussion. so, i am suggesting a book that was just recommended to me called ‘The Mating Mind’. It’s an evolutionary psych book. If you want more info, you can go to amazon.com or one of the other internet book sellers and read a synopsis. I have to go check it out from the library. after i finish reading it, i’ll post my thoughts. any other suggestions on making forumosa.com better?
Every browser has a function to display fonts in large, medium or small size … you just need to check it … ha, and it doesn’t work with Forumosa …
And paragraphs! We need more paragraphs! ![]()
Every browser has a function to display fonts in large, medium or small size … you just need to check it … ha, and it doesn’t work with Forumosa …
Works on my firefox. Is English any easier to understand in a bigger font ? As long as you can see the letters does it make a difference ?
And we need feedback in the feedback forum ![]()
Easy on Safari or Opera.
Matthew, Chinese is easier to understand in larger fonts although in my experience, Chinese readers don’t seem to have any problem with decoding smaller sized roman script as it is comparatively easier on the eye.
As long as the words aren’t linked to anything. Nothing worse than having every word leap into bigger font or turn into a clickable link when you roll the curson over it.
As for a book forum, look for “What are you Reading?”
I want the bathroom cleaned more often.
And better smelling soap in there.
And remember…those are not mints in the urinals.
But they taste like mints.
More scantily clad avatars.
Certainly, but shouldn’t you be leading by example?
by making forumosa.com more valuable to chinese english language learners, i was thinking that the people who pay the bills could make some money off this site so they don’t have to ask for donations. the site just keeps getting better and better. i just checked out the photos of pets for adoption, which is great.
They could even partner with ICRT, I here they are doing great things for the chinese english language learners. ![]()

Thing is, it’s not designed as a site for Chinese English language learners and never has been. There’s a lot of teachers posting here, many of whom are here precisely because they’re unlikely to get pestered by students. While all nationalities are welcome, the language of the site is English, and it’s stated very clearly that it’s primarily a site for expats about living in Taiwan. People learning English have many choices for sites to do that.
Sandman is exactly right - please keep the English students away from me, please! I try to leave them behind when I leave work at night!
Go back to basics.
Make it a chalkboard at Maoman’s place and use chalk instead of markers.
Festive snow would be good.
Sandman is right? Since when is Sandman right …? I want to promote the Flemish language … can I? ![]()
i am NOT taking the clothes off my avatar. uuuuurrrrggghhh.
and i agree, it’s a website for expats not taiwan locals, isn’t it? maybe we could set up a Flemish subforum, a French one, an Afrikaans one, another in Dutch, another in german, and one in spanish.
sorry, my brain can’t do Gaelic.
i don’t donate to forumosa.com and have no desire to do so. so out of a sense of duty, i was proposing a money-making scheme. those who do not donate are morally bound to come up with ideas to help the administrators make money. i mean ideas excluding the use of porn. i don’t get how this site could not make money. what other english language media is more widely read on taiwan than forumosa.com? if i were a business catering to expats/locals who want to go where expats hang out, i would be willing to pay a lot to advertise on forumosa.com. if i were living in taiwan, i would be willing to pay to log on to forumosa.com.
