WCIF Luncheon/Sandwich/Sliced Deli Meat?

I went to the Far Eastern Mall “City’s Super” today.
it’s awesome. There is a butcher there, his name is Will, he’s a local, really nice guy. I saw he had a nice leg of lamb, fresh, looked very nice. I asked the price for it and he put it on the scale, the thing weighted almost 2 Kg. Price 1,100NT.
I said “Will, this is a bit too expensive”.
He looked at me, smile and said " OK, OK, I give you 800NT" It sounded better but I thought let’s try less. I says “600” he goes “OK” with a nice smile, I ask him if he can carve it for me and string it, he said give me 3 minutes. he comes back all done wrapped up, with the bone aside.
I felt I was talking to my butcher back home.

I asked if in the future I could get different cuts, he said just tell me what you need and I’ll do it for you. Awesome service.

This store has all kinds of ham, Virginian too for you Hobart.
Bakery stuff too, I found Vanilla sugar, all kinds of flour and yeast.
Plus everything is labelled in English.

That’s my store now.

Dong Hua South road, Section 2, #208. It’s the basement of the Hotel. Coming from North, it’s just before HePing.
Good shopping.

Tell me again, which Taiwan was this? :astonished:
That’s fantastic news. He really knows how to do Western-style cuts? And he can bone out and tie a leg of lamb in three minutes … and give it to you for half-price?
I’m going tomorrow!

Yes sir, I should have video tapped it. But here are a couple pics.

Make sure you ask for Will.
Feel very bad about the price. (The first one)
Don’t speak Chinese, just simple words, coz he loves English.

I am going back after tomorrow for my Roast Beef. 700NT 1 1/2 Kg.
I LOVE TAIWAN
:notworthy:

Told ya so  Though I don’t remember seeing any roast beef. I saw some pepper roast beef… sorta. That what ya talking about? That’s a hell of a price. I’m definitely going to have to try that myself. What time did you go?

No, just raw roast beef, properly tied up and all. He doesn’t have it at the window, but he’ll prepare it for you. Take it home, put whatever herbs you like and in the oven. Hmm…Now we’re talking.

I think we are going to have to rename this thread, I started one earlier looking for the best butcher in Taipei, I think we found our guy.

Ah that makes more sense. Hmm I might just have to try that. Though I do prefer a good ole BBQ. Up on my rooftop with a standing BBQ grill.

Thanks. Good to know when he might be working there.

Only if the prices can keep up.

OUTSTANDING!

What kinds of flour? Whole wheat, rye, organic?

Also, does the store has a parking lot?

It does. Tons of it.

Yes, organic, self rising and some US brands.

Big one.

I’m cooking my lamb tonight…

looking for good deli’s in and around taipei, cheese, cut meats etc. hear tienmu quite good. :notworthy:

Go to the Far Eastern Hotel on Dong Huan South Road sec 2. In the basement there a City’s Super Mall. They’ve a great selection of delis.
You might want to check this thread too.

In Tienmu, if you head to Zhongshan N. rd, I think section 7, there is a mediterranean deli called Maison Alexandre. It’s by no means a good old sandwich shop, and its a bit upscale, but everything is delicious as well as imported. :homer:

PM me with your email and I’ll send you my Deli Meat file. It’s got a list and the then current prices for Breeze, Jason, & Far Eastern.

I’m wondering whether any place in town (Taibei) has reasonably priced turkey breast or chicken breast (slices for sandwiches). Jason’s is a whopping NT$990/kg, and the presliced, prepackaged stuff there, as well as the stuff at Breeze, is only marginally cheaper. At that price, it’s gonna cost you almost as much to make your own sandwich as to buy one at a sub sandwich shop! :loco:

I’ve never understood how a country that eats so much pork can have such poor ham and bacon! You’d think that it’d be a haven for smoked ham and bacon, but the quality of both here have turned me off. Whenever I’m in the mood, I just go to Subway and get a sub. No way in hell I’d pay 990/kg when I can get a pound for 50 nt back home.

Wellcomes usually stock a small selection of Wetsern style luncheon meats, including Gypsy ham, roast beef, and regular sandwich ham. Baking a nice, simple loaf of bread in your little oven, as I have done, is a pretty simple affair, though takes a bit of time (proving), but makes for a cheap and scrumptious and normal meal. Fill your sandwich with the meat of your choice plus lettuce, tomato, onion…you’ll be smiling!

Whiskey Tango Hotel, I am at the end of my wits!!! :taz:

I make it all the way to Jason’s during lunch time and I find none, yes, none, not a bit, nada, ni uno, o any kind of imported ham, mortadela, and other stuff. I was specifically searching for turkey ham. Nope. No hay.

In City Super the stock is getting slimmer by the minute, and I am already paying through the nose. Next, I’ll end up buying in Breeze. :s

I really do not like -nor trust- the local stuff. But, alas, is that my only choice?

The Forumosan poster “El Toro” sells deli meats (frozen). Perhaps you could contact him and order some?

Already negotiationg a joint purchase with a friend…

But El Toro does not have turkey… :frowning:
