It seems that the past winter and the present summer have been more extreme temperature-wise than in the previous years. Or is it just in my imagination?

In my experience the weather this year is closer to what I’ve come to see as “normal” than it has been for the past several years.
I agree with Paogao. This is more normal Taiwan weather. Maybe the drought of the previous two years affected the weather before. When I first came to Taiwan it was more like this…very humid, and with a short thunderstorm every afternoon. Hot!
Do you mean extreme as in moving from one extreme to another, or as in the skateboard thing…this is extreme action, man! Max X, etc. etc. ?
I agree with Poagao. The last two summers were abnormally cool. This is a real Taipei summer, although it doesn’t always rain so much.
I only have 6 or 7 years to go by, but my opinion is that there’s no such thing as ‘normal’ when it comes to the weather in Taiwan. Here’s the only given’s.

Are you kidding? I haven’t had to wade across Xin Yi in years. The weather hasn’t been as bad this summer as when I first got here and discovered the beauty of walking down a street lined with boutiques…and walking as close to their entrances as possible.
But I feel as parched as a piece of dessicated leather in the Gobi. I drink and drink, but the seems to be no point. I stay thirsty. In the morning I wake up with a dry tongue.
This is the hottest that I remember it being since I’ve been here (17 years or so…the wine and women cloud my perception of Time).
I like hot as I grew up in desert type heat and I was always pretty comfortable when one could fry eggs on Mom’s car roof but what we have (at least down South) now is just plain uncomfortable. I mean, it is fucking hot right now. This nasty, pouch sticking to your thigh type heat.
Last winter had really late typhoons and this summer is hot. Either the dinosaurs are coming back or the zombies are up to no good again.
There doesn’t seem to be as many rainy one-off days as in past June/July periods. There was an unseasonal typhoon last year which may account for that.
I was away for two months this year so I can’t say for the whole year so far gone by.
Last winter’s weather seemed more on par with what it was like the first few years I was here.
But no question about the hot and cold extremes. I saw freezing rain for the first time last winter and now we have summer temperatures approaching 40C in the summer.
For those looking for some heat relief…
