Weird on-line radio caching problem

Hey tech fans,
I’ve got this weird problem at work. I can listen to on-line radio, but the last couple of months I keep getting the same radio program that I listened to the week previously. At first I thought it was a problem with the site itself, but now I’m beginning to suspect it has something to do with our work web server.

You see, I don’t listen live, I click on a link that gives me a streaming download of a show already broadcast, say on Wednesday morning. It should give me the most recent Wednesday show when I ask for this, but like I said, I’ve been getting the same shows for about 4 weeks now.

So is it normal for my work server to have cached this, and that’s why I’m getting the same download again and again?

And if this is the case, is there any way round this? (The show uses an embedded Real player on a web page, by the way (it’s BBC radio).)

Thanks for any advice.

Are you listening to Radio 1 by any chance ?

I don’t think anything would cache streaming stuff. They just put the wrong programme on to confuse you.

Yes, are you getting similar problems? Latest Chris Moyles is stuck on the week of the Champions League Final.

Erm, does this link work? Should be last Friday’s show.
bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/networks … moyles_fri
It’ll open in Real player obviously (well, embedded in a web page).
If it’s Scott Mills speaking instead of Chris Moyles (he was standing in for Moyles last week), then it’s current, and something’s screwy with my work setup.

Edit: Just cos it SAYS it’s Scott Mills and shows a photo of him doesn’t mean it is. I get the picture, but the audio is still weeks old.

Audio?
Audio?
Yes, on audio. Maybe your .rm file is cached with makes it stream an old one or summit.

Hmm… let me do a search.

Oh, and on that page you gave there’s a little picture of this guy:

Who I don’t think is Chris Moyles.

If have have a picture of a fat bloke on yours you’ve probably got the whole page cached, including a link to stream last Friday’s programme.

Erm, I don’t think you read the edit to my post a bit further up. I do get the photo of Scott Mills, and the explanation that he’s standing in, but I get Chris Moyles audio.

OK, well, good news. I did a search for any and all Real Player files and there was nothing of any use. I even searched within hidden files and folders.

I then went into Real Player’s settings and found the history option, which I emptied, and then disabled completely.

I’m now listening to Scott Mills. God only knows what format it was storing those streams in, but they seem to be gone now.

Cheers for the help.

Try clearing your history in real player, it might be resuming from the wrong, but identically named, stream.

Oh weird. It’s at it again. Curiouser and curiouser. It started off by saying that it was Scott Mills standing in for Chris Moyles (in the jingle), but then it got a bit stuck and I skipped forward 5 minutes. Now it’s Chris Moyles speaking.
Come to think of it Scott Mills was actually speaking a bit before it farked up.

OK, did it again.

Starts off working OK, then I skip forward 5 minutes and actually go back in time a couple of weeks (plus 5 minutes).

My non-tech suggestion - listen to BBC 6 Music instead. It’s miles better.

Well, I listen to it for the chat more than anything else. Good chat on BBC 6 is there?

If you like northern humour that needs to be followed with a drum roll and cymbal crash, listen to Shaun Keavney’s breakfast show. Personally I get enough of that just hanging around Funk500.

The music on there is much better - the DJs are hit and miss. Chris Hawkins on the graveyard shift is pretty annoying, but they also have some excellent, knowledgeable and enthusiastic people like Craig Charles and Gideon Coe.

If you want banter, listen to Stephen Merchant or Russell Howard’s Sunday show - pretty entertaining. The station bosses seem to have a thing for employing comics - Phill Jupitus did the breakfast show a while back. Anyway, I like the station mainly because I can listen to most of the songs without ranting about the shite that’s in the charts nowadays (Mika, most modern “R&B” etc).

Virgin Radio is good, it’s like Radio 1 for grown-ups. Does have annoying ads though…

Cool. I’ll check it out.

Matthew, Virgin is my backup station. It works through iTunes, which is great for when my IT dept blocks other media players.

And now for more news…
I had a look at the source code from the web page that that Real Player is embedded into. The file that is plays has a “.rpm” extension. A quick search for those on my computer (I had only searched for rm and ram previously) turned up a stack of files, which I am currently deleting). Stay tuned for the conclusion to this exciting saga.
