Weiya Time

It’s weiya time again, so how about you Seguers sharing some of your experiences of those very special fun and feasting “tail-tooth” celebrations? Do you attend your office or school bashes? Where are they held, how’s the quality of food and entertainment, how does everyone behave, and how much do you enjoy them? Any particularly unforgettable experiences, horrible, delightful or simply weird?

Ours was good. See tech in Taiwan for details. i was there, the food was Chinese,i actually co arranged it, so i guess i can’t complain too much.

We had it a Taoyuan - Shimen Shuiku. A beautiful cafe at the lake side where one can view the twinpeak. see pics here

wei-yas suck. they’re even worse when one is not illegible for any prizes.

where’s the secretary? Any big prices? Look better than most Wei-ya’s

We hid the secretary. No big price. I got an mp3 player which I gave away.

Nice pics Ax. What a beautiful place. I’ve got to get out of Taipei more often.

Our wei-ya is being preceded by an optional company trip to the wenshen. Not sure I want to be naked with the boss, but as a new employee I feel a duty to attend. :?

One thing that bothers me about such events is the thimble-sized “wo jing nee” glasses. Drink one-third of a shot, then the bottle circulates round the table and you have to wait 20 minutes before you can have another drop. That is, unless you’re the boss or the guy who just got promoted or married or whatever that goes around “wo jing neeing everyone else” and getting plastered. Not that I want to get drunk, necessarily, but it would be nice to have a decent sized glass.

Ax, can you get the exact address for that place and post it here? Maybe someone in your office has the business card or something? Is it really just a cafe or do they also have hot food?

Ax, that place has really great views. Can you gain access to the reservoir from there … and perhaps slip into the water for a swim?

Alleycat, how come you weren’t eligible to win any of the prizes in the draw? I would have thought that anyone who attended a weiya ought to be in with an equal chance to win a share of the goodies being given away.

This is a true story:

a friend of mine in Taipei, American bloke, he got shanghaied a few years ago into going to a motivational pyramind sales company weiya party in Taipei, but under a different disguise. He was asked to sit at the head table and hand out name cards saying he was Doctor Roy Brown of some college in Los Angeles, business head, and to make small talk with the invited guests under this false name and title.

Then he was asked to go to the stage and hand out certificates and prizes to the best sales people that year, introduced as Dr. Roy Brown from the USA, and he did all this, trying to hide his shame, he told me, all for a small fee of NT$5000 and all the booze he could drink that night. And the BigBoss also gave him a free hotel room for that night at the Regency, all paid for.

Then he was invited out later to a naked lady KTV deal, that was his reward for a shitty , drunken evening.

Apparently, he got roped into this thing because the BigBoss wanted impress his underlings that a PH.D. from the USA was one of his good friends! What bullshit!

Nobody knew a thing. I died laughing when he told me this story last year. The Boss had printed up these bogus fake name name cards for him! O Taiwan!

I got this phone number here 03-3888853. Call and ask for direction.

my first weiya ever. we had two. one for the smaller department sections (had dinner) and one for the whole company (no food, just acts). i only won $8000nt. i was not eligible for the big prizes, though.

Formosa, that sounds great. I’d like to apply for the position if it’s available this year. Can you send me the boss’ contact info?

Yes I’ve been to that cafe a few times. Beautiful views over the lake. She could certainly ‘slip over the side’ about 200 metres into the reservoir. You’d never come out again of course. I think you might know already that swimming is practically banned in Taiwan and it’s certainly not allowed in Shimen Reservoir. You can however swim at other spots further upstream I’ve heard and there are plenty of rivers and waterfalls in the more central mountains you can do it. It’s my impression that that cafe is part owned by a foreigner (I saw what looked like the owner once there) but I can’t be sure. You would hardly be surprised as it’s the only decent cafe overlooking a beauty spot I’ve ever found in the Taoyuan area. Really nice! You can take a boat up and down the lake too which is fun! The area around Shimen is really picturesque and the dam is quite nice. I’ve driven around there and seen people collecting wild bees, a lot of butterflies and flowers, nice tree ferns dotted around, very tropical.
On a sunny day with a mountain breeze you would be loving it. You can drive out from Taoyuan on a scooter or get the Longtan turnoff on the highway and follow the brown tourist signs for Shimen Dam.

We don’t have weiyas, instead our company has this similar party right after CNY - chun jiu. It’s gonna be at the Regent this year I think. Last year I got a 5000 hong bao, VCD, and some cooking wares which I don’t even know what they are for.

And that’s the way the cookie crumbles.
I don’t bother going anymore

rico,
