ive recently came across a youtube documentary about japanese prisons where inmates are not allowed to talk, everyone must work and must knee while in solitary confinement.
all i know about prisons in taiwan is that they can grow plants on prison grounds.

That’s where many of the horticulturalists end up.

Nasty. You sleep on the cell floor next to the latrine.
I have no idea, as it’s actually pretty hard to end up in jail in Taiwan. Vast majority of sentences are commutable to a fine. The rule is 6 months or less.
I’ve visited the jingmei jail and that might give you some ideas…

Look, prison stinks. In prison you are somebody’s bitch. Don’t drop the soap!
The food is horrible. Gruel 油條,gruel 蛋餅. Nothing but gruel. Plus, you can eat your own hair.

I’ve been in the military and I think the food is probably similar. Meaning it’s not going to be best tasting but nutricious.
In American prisons they love to serve soy protein.

Wasn’t there an article written by a foreign resident that went to prison and had to make bags in there?
Don’t see how that’s bad, I think you rather work than be locked down 23 hours
The ethical issue is whether it’s forced labor to make people to do that.

They make joss sticks—very well made in Taiwan
In the us the 13th amendment allows slavery as a punishment for crimes. I don’t know the law in Taiwan.
But what’s worse, sit around playing spades or reading, or work and get time off or maybe a little bit of commissary money?
Forced labor being wrong, will seeing how it’s considered legal as punishment for crimes in many countries…

the 13th amendment
Guy I know spent time in the basement of the Taichung Police Station on Wenshin. No natural light. Florescent light was on 24/7. Absolute misery. His Chinese speaking level skyrocketed however.
Did the guards play porn on the TV screen ?
