What are the best strategies for saving money on international travel?

A better question would be “how can I save money traveling to Europe? I like to go to Sweden”.

Couch surfing, limit activities to hiking, street photography, peering through museum windows, playing guitar in the tourists spots with your hat out. Eat street food. Try to get a local girlfriend and then you can upgrade from couch surfing to staying at her place and eating her food.

These tips will work from Sweden to Kathmandu! You’re welcome.

You could make it a spiritual trip. Many monasteries accept in pilgrims and give them free food and lodging. But this comes at the expense of time as you may be expected to do some basic duties. And you know the saying, time equals money.

I like to save locations in Google Maps lists, as it helps plan an itinerary and gives a clear view of transportation options, distances, and nearby food choices.

Additionally, local tour operators often offer daily trips. I once booked a tour in Amsterdam through the Viator website, and Klook is another great option for this. Many hotels also provide local tour information at their front desk, so it’s worth asking when you check in.

Before anything, it’s important to clarify what you want to do and which places you plan to visit. Trying to see everything in a short time can lead to stress and waste both time and energy. My advice is to keep your plan simple and manageable.

Fly commercial instead of taking the jet!

All a matter of perspective

If going to the US, they have food banks where you can get free food.

Please don’t travel to a country and then try to draw from resources meant for poor people living there. That’s the same category as begpacking…

Go to a country with a bad reputation (Western media coverage) and therefore few foreign tourists, a country with low cost of living but that is not poor, a country with super hospitable people who line up to invite you to their homes and treat you to lavish feasts where ever you go…

Have seen too many travel videos about Iran lately…

Just don’t expect to ever receive an ESTA for the US again :man_shrugging:

Well, there’s Israel. I don’t know the expense of going there. Just stay away from gaza or west bank.

Cheaper than Hilton, I have not tried Marriott

There some cheap trips here (some also not cheap), also meet new travel friends of all ages

I know a lot of taiwanese go to Japan for travel because it’s not much more than domestic travel to kending or hualien.

So the OP isn’t in Taiwan has no intention of coming to Taiwan and joined the forum just to ask this question?

Our goal is to convince him to come to Taiwan now, which shouldn’t be hard.

Well, at least they’ve learned that Gaza shouldn’t be their first choice of holiday destination.

And has left the building… to go farming elsewhere?

You can often find the cheapest hotels near the central train station. Small rooms that don’t look good on photos tend to be cheaper, especially if they don’t have windows.

If you skip two meals a day and buy bread and fruits in the supermarket for your third meal, you can save a lot of money on food.

Avoid taxis like the pest. Walk everywhere.

Take public transportation. If Taiwan, buy the Tpass. It’s totally worth it. I believe they are looking into offering shorter Tpass for tourists.

Do not take the taxi unless you just have to get there soon, or if you’re carrying heavy stuff. Often Lalamove will be cheaper if carrying stuff.
