What are your favorite apps for jailbroken iphone?

I finally got to jailbreak my iphone and I’d like to know what apps you like that would not be available unless you hacked your iphone. So far I read other posters talk about MyWi. It allows you to connect any Wifi enabled devices to the internet through your iphone. That’s definitely a winner for me since I just bought a notebook. I will look for it soon. The other one I read about is winterboard. It allows you to change the look of your iphone screen. Sounds cool. I’ve also been trying to get mobilelog. Not cheap at $7,49, but I want it. It enables you to have full control over your phone calls log; something the iphone surprisingly doesn’t do if it’s not jailbroken.

I haven’t had much time to play with Cydia yet, but it would be nice to know what you favs jailbroken apps are.

At the moment, I’ve got two must haves for me.

  1. Cycorder; video camera for 3G (essential app for those withought video recording capabilities, ie 3GS.
  2. MyWi; tethering app (I bought this last night actually, and already consider it the 2nd best app I’ve ever bought … behind AirVideo).

I had “winterboard” installed before my lastest JB, and will probably put it on again later. Looking forward to reading what others are using,

did you have to install Rock in order to buy MyWi? I tried buying it yesterday, it installed Rock and my phone froze. I flashed the phone and after that if I turned on MyWi it would shut down on its own in 3-4 seconds every time. It never even gave me enough time to enter my credit card info. Then the phone froze again when I uninstalled Rock AND MyWi. :s

Robin, I installed rock first, and grabbed the ‘trial version’ of MyWi from there. After testing it for two days, I went online (from my notebook) and bought it.

After that, a reboot set everything up properly, and my ‘trial’ disappeared and my paid app was running.

I had a bit of trouble reading their instructions at first, but here it is;

Very Important Step!!! Please Read!!!
Once your iDevice reboots you will have a new “Cydia” icon on your iDevice. In order to install Rock on your iDevice you will first need to launch Cydia and after its initial startup (and restart) you will want to go to the search tab and search for and install RockApp. Once installed you can close Cydia and launch Rock to Get Rocking!

OK, this is a different method than what I did. I installed the MyWi and Rock bundle from Cydia and it didn’t work for me. I will give that a try and I will let you know if I’m more successful that way.

I am posting this with the network cable unplugged from my notebook via wifi tethering. :discodance: I am pleasantly surprised with how fast the 3g connection is on the notebook, too. It’s a wonderful application.

As I mentioned above, I wanted to get an app called MobileLog in order to be able to delete single entries in the recent call log. The developers of this app are in partnership with a company called eselerate who processes sales of the app. I never managed to buy it. I got error meaages every time I tried to buy the app.

I googled my problem and found out a way to hack the phone to add an edit button to the recent calls log. It was not easy but I managed and I feel like a true hacker now. :slight_smile: No, really. I had to install a program to SSh my phone, then I had to download a file and rename it. Then I had to add this file into the root files using said SSH program. Then I had to install an app called “terminal” and run it. From there I had to enter some information into it and reboot my phone. Tada!

RobinTaiwan is a hacker in the making. :laughing:

If you want to know how to do this, ask me and I can post a tutorial and some links, but do it soon or else I’ll have forgotten how to do it in about two days. It was a tedious job.

At this point in time, I’m very happy to have jailbroken my phone. I can turn my phone into a wifi hotspot (cost me ten bucks), I can delete single phone calls and I can customize the look of my springboard with Winterboard. These few things are well worth a jailbreak to me. And I haven’t even taken the time to browse other Cydia or Rock apps yet! I’ve just worked on installing the ones I’ve been wanting to jailbreak my phone for.

Voiding the warranty? Who cares, I’ll probably buy the 4g in a year from now anyways. I’m hooked. This device is an awesome piece of technology.

I installed two more free ones yesterday.

1- Multiicommover: Enables you to move multiple icons on the springboard at once. It works well.

2- Categories: This one is very good. Enables you to put many apps into folders on the springboard. For example, you can put all the stock apps you never use into one folder under a new icon you create. Tap the new icon and all the unused apps appear. This really clears up the springboard and it saves time scrolling through too many icons.

I got them both from Rock.

I just sexied up my phone with the following;
-> winterboard -> Buuf2 (theme)
-> winterboard -> Saurik (fonting)
-> SBSsettings -> enabling me to put the battery % there on the screen, along with mail received and alarm in status bar
-> cydelete (enables you to delete cydia apps)
-> makeitmine -> change your carrier to “amos” :wink:

I’m still messing around with a few things but this is where I’m at;

Well, I don’t know how to post a screenshot like you did so I can’t show it to you. What I can say is it works very well and it’s very easy to use. Two things worth mentioning:

1-Once or twice after creating a folder, the name I assigned to it didn’t show. It just showed “null” as in no name assigned. An easy fix is to open categories, click on manage folders, select the unnamed folder and click edit. Type in the name, and done. Not really a problem, just an extra few clicks to name the icons as you wish. And you don’t actually have to create an icon for each folder. The program has about 200 of them to choose from, that’s all.

I created three new folders to which I assigned a name and an icon. I named one of them “Useless” and it contains all the apps I never use. The other folder I created is named “Rarely Used” and that is self explanatory. And the third one is named “Hacks.” It contains all the apps that are essentially related to my jailbreak such as Cydia, Rock, Winterboard, Makeitmine, iWipeCache, etc. My springboard is very clean now and it is exactly one full page.

2- VERY IMPORTANT: Make sure you leave at least one or two icons on the springboard. In other words, DO NOT create categories for ALL your icons. I mean, do not move all your icons into folders you created with this application. If you do that, the springboard will not reload, your screen will be black and the only way to fix this will be to restore your phone and start all over.

Your new theme looks good, by the way. I downloaded some themes today, too, including the one you got, and I added them to the phone via SSH. I think it’s easier and faster than installing themes through Rock or Cydia. That way you can download many themes on your computer desktop, and once you have the root files open with a SSH program, you can just add all the themes at once. Then when you open Winterboard, the themes are there ready to use.

PS: I also installed a free app called “iWipe Cache” before I tried to run new themes. What it does is it clears the icons and springboard cache eliminating chances of having bugs when you modify the icons and the springboard with a new theme.

PPS: I also bought a cheap app today called Infinidock. This app lets you put as many apps as you want in your dock as opposed to only four. Mind you, if you add more than 5, it gets a bit small to click on. This app is new, and it is only available in Cydia, not Rock. This also contributed to cleaning up my springboard. It’s a system file so you won’t see an icon after you install it. just jiggle the springboard and drag apps to your dock.

Here’s something really cool I just figured out.

If you download a theme to your desktop, it’s usually in a zipped format. When you unzip it, you will have one or two folders. When you open the folder, you will find the icons files. They are basically small image files. From there, you can use iphone browser to access the phone’s root files. Under “applications” you will find icon.png files which you can preview to make sure it is the image you’re after. For example, under “Phoneapp” you will find the icon for “phone.” You can replace this icon with the icon in the icon file of the theme you downloaded.

In other words, you can pick any icons you like from any themes and make them yours to personalize your phone. To be clear, you can install a theme but change all the icons at will to personalize your theme at will. Even better, you can use photoshop to make your own icons and add them to the application files on the iphone with iphone browser.

As an example, I have an application called Darling. It basically calls my wife with one tap. Well, I’m about to change the icon for that application with an actual image of my wife. :slight_smile: Tap her image and the phone rings her. Isn’t that great?

A true hacker in the making, indeed! I enjoy doing this. Soon, I bet I’ll be creating my own themes altogether.

with the right gestures setup, you get on-demand backgrounding and a really quick app switcher with preview.

since the iphone apps are generally built to stop at any time and start up quickly, i like this better than what happens on the slower android phones (ie: pre nexus one) of having to run an app killer occasionally when the phonee bogs. this way, you single task unless you want to use say an app pair to say drop cut-n-paste data and forth.

really like the buuf2 theme. are there more icons available?

The Buff theme comes bundled with a whole lot of extra icons. You have to download it and not through Cydia to see them.

WhenI got buuf, it came loaded with about half of my icons, including the more mainstream ones like IM+, mail, facebook etc.

If you go to modmyi, there’s a request page where you can request an icon. The thread is around 450 pages long, but from memory, you can download a .zip of all the icons made up until page 310 of that thread. Through that .zip, I managed to find a suitable icon for all of my apps bar three, and I made a request for those. One of those requests got done, unfortunately my Chinese to English dictionaries didn’t.

Unfortunately since my JB, it doesn’t show up in iPhoto during syncs so I need to forward them as an email from ‘photos’ on my iPhone.
