What cell phone do I need?

Please help me out deciding what cell phone should I buy.
This what I need.

  1. Cool rings, downloadable if needed to change.
  2. Bluetooth for sync with my Apple G4 PB running OS X 10.3 and I also want this neat bluetooth ear piece.
  3. I want to be able to connect to the internet while outside via my PB using the phone if no reception available.
  4. Of course cool design, prefarably one that opens, you know like the Motorola V.60.

Do I need anything else? No, I guess not, let me know if I miss some important features. because I guess the price changes with the more features, right?

Thanks for your help.

These are the best. You just flick it out and say, “Beam me up. Mr. Scot.”

I thought it was “beam me up Scotty.”

r u a real trekker?

sorry to hijack this thread, but can anyone help me out with my phone. I’d like to be able to use hanyu pinyin input for text messaging, but i guess it’s not an option in taiwan (my china phone had it of course, and much easier for me). Is there any place here or perhaps in HK that would maybe ‘update’ the firmware so as to allow this option?

what r my options?

Hey, how do you guys do to get all this “quote” within quotes etc…when you post an answer?

It’s “Scotty, Beap me up”

No worries for the hijack.

Can anyone really help me?

Click the Quote button. If there are already quotes they will be within the quotes.
I don’t think Mr. Spock would say Scotty. Captain Kirk would. I should have spelled it with two t’s. (I am not a Trekker, I just like to use pure logic.)

As far as cell phones go, you should spend as much money as possible to get the best and the newest.

Apple has an extensive list of iSync compatible phones on their site:

I know because I just printed it out today. My trusty old Nokia (five years on?) is slowly dying and it’s time to get a new one.

What phone did you buy?

I’ve been looking for a phone with bluetooth hoping that I can sync it with my powerbook. I swore to never buy another Sony Ericsson after purchasing my current phone.

I like the Motorola v303, though no bluetooth, but wonder if it would ever be able to sync with my powerbook via usb. Anyone tried?

Any recommendations? All I want is something small that can sync with my Powerbook and perhaps produce high quality ring tones.

Me too. I also want a flip that I can sync with my powerbook.

I am currently looking at:

Treo 600 (my Treo 180g syncs effortlessly, so this looks the #1 choice for me)
SE T630 (small, does what I need)
SE P900 (heard many good and many bad stories)
Nokia 6600 (its a Nokia… the Microsoft of phones  They arent a particularly Mac supportive manufacturer apparently)

The 6600 is a bit to round (bulky) for my taste, the 6820 or the coming soon 6610i might be an alternative.
Nokia likes to support open standards and not proprietery formats though instead of cooperating with MS they should have choosen Linux instead.

The Nokia site makes no mention of support for Mac users for these phones tho…

There appears to be some support according to the Apple site. Since many nokia phones support SyncML it should work (?).

I would love to get a Treo 600 or even a Treo 270 if I could fnd one in Hsinchu. At first look PDA’s seem to be in short supply here.

I’m leaning towards the Nokia 6820 though I still like the look of the Motorola V303.

I actually went out and bought a Sony Ericsson t630 and a bluetooth earpiece last week. Was a wee bit expensive but I was gently persuaded by the cutest woman working in any cell phone shop in Hsinchu.

I was hesitant to buy another SE as my old one had a ton of annoying problems. They do seem to have solved most of the issues I had.

For the most part it works like a charm. Bluetooth is absolutely fun and useful. The phone syncs up with my Powerbook with little difficulty - I do have some issues with it syncing with iCal though. All the times seem to get messed up and it won’t accept all day events. Being able to sync my address book is a Godsend.

The screen quality is remarkably fine and I can, with a little tweaking in photoshop, transfer some photos over to the phone to show how beautiful a baby I have.

The only caveat I can think of is the stares/laughter you receive when talking into the headset. I guess it’s deserved as it feels a bit strange to me as well.

Overall not a bad adult toy.

I’ve never bought a cell phone in my life. I just inherited hand-me-downs from my wife and most of the features I never learned how to use. So I am ignorant of the most basic concepts of cell phone technology and would appreciate some basic guidance. Can someone tell me if the following is true:

If you’re a girl you should buy the smallest, cutest little phone you can afford, but if you’re a guy you should buy one with lots of great features, which will make it bigger and more cumbersome but will allow you to access the internet, etc.?

True?

Oh, so THAT’S why they vibrate. :howyoudoin:

I guess I’m just too stodgy - the reason I bought a cell phone is so that I can carry on a phone conversation. I have no need for color screens, built-in cameras, video games, downloadable ring tones. I don’t even like text messaging - if somebody has something to say to me, they can just call, or send me email. I don’t want my phone beeping at me at 3 am with a message saying “For a good time, call Lily, 095XXXXXXX.” As for surfing the Internet, I’d rather use my laptop or visit an Internet cafe - how enjoyable is surfing when the screen is the size of my thumb?

But one feature I do look for is a LOUD ringer. It’s important because I want to hear the phone ringing when I’m driving a motorbike, or walking down a noisy street (and what street in Taiwan isn’t noisy?). I don’t need a phone that plays the national anthem or “Hotel California” when it rings, I just want it to ring loud enough so I can hear it. From what I’ve seen on the local market, the two loudest phones are those made by Motorola and BenQ.

Absolutely! Especially the part about the loud ringer. All those other bells and whistles? Meh!

Text messaging is THE reason (for me) to own a cell phone–especially here in Taiwan. I much prefer it to being called unless it’s really necessary to discuss something at length. Getting messages is far less intrusive than unwanted or inconvenient phone calls.

Just set your message alert to vibrate rather than ring.

Oh, if you plan to stick it up your behind, so you can get that tickling feeling when your sex partner rings you, then a bit of care, as the Nokias shake themselves in instead of out. You might need to go to a hospital to have them surgically remove your cell.

This is not a joke, ask Huang Guang Chen for details, as he in an earlier life worked as part-time cell phone arse extractor.

If you have a supported bluetooth phone like the Sony Ericson’s, check out Salling Clicker. It lets you use the phone as a remote control for many things. I use it mostly for iTunes but it can do a lot more.
