What do you like about your job?

I’d rather be lying on a beach somewhere or hiking in the mountains. But as jobs go, I like my job. The work’s often interesting and challenging, my boss for the most part leaves me alone unsupervised to do what I feel needs to be done, I’m learning, gaining experience, making contacts, and the pay’s not too bad. But one of the little things I like about my job is the security guards. They’re all very friendly and respectful. Especially one.

There’s this one guy in cap and uniform at the front desk who always greets me, as I arrive in the morning, with a huge grin and a long drawn out, “TSAAOOOOOOOO.” Other times he’ll snap to attention, with the same silly grin, give me a crisp salute and call out, “GOOD MORNING SIR!” And I can’t help but smile. . . and laugh. I don’t think I’ve ever been saluted before and rarely does someone refer to me as “sir.” It just seems so ridiculous (and I think he knows it too). But he’s performing his job perfectly and it’s a nice way to start the work day.

I like the fact I only put in 18 hours per week (I won’t be so euphemistic as to call it working), and net the same money I would at home busting my ass 40 hours per week.

I like the fact I’m never subjected to the verbal abuse I got from supevisors and / or clients back home.

I like the fact that I’m the boss and I can do whatever I like, when I like. Like today for instance, I’ll be leaving my office at 12h00 and head for Bao Shan Golf Club for a slow 18 holes with some of me mates and business contacts.

I also like the fact that I have one of the best office managers in Taiwan to take care of things when I’m not in. She’s a graduate from NTU, early 30’s, an organizer of note, hard-working and very, very sensible. Irreplaceable. An absolute jewel. :notworthy:

I like having lots of multimillion dollar equipment at my disposal, and being able to break any amount of products I like with that equipment in the name of ‘testing’. :smiling_imp:
After that however, it’s all downside.

I like being able to live well after only working for 3 hours a day. All the rest is just gravy. If I actually end up working a staggering 25 hours in a week, that means I made a lot of money. I like having a definite choice right in my hands.

I used to work sometimes 85 or more hours a week back home and I couldn’t make it and I wasn’t having any fun.

I like the fact that my jobs are in Taiwan, as well, and I drive a motorbike to work almost every day.

I effin LOVE my job. I would almost rather do my job than lie on a beach. But then again, sometimes I AM lying on a beach when I do my job. Woot.
I love that sometimes I work as little as 10 hours a week. And sometimes I work like a donkey. And I love that I choose which is which.

I love this thread. Please, keep it going!

Nothing. Except the morning hugs.

I like playing with the high-tech toys that are part of my job, though I am not allowed to break any of them. :frowning:

I got cool co-workers and we have fun despite the usual work issues.

I do like the vast majority of co-workers and the company is definitely a meritocracy.

I also like the way going to work denies me any sunshine when it’s a perfect frigging day outside. I mean, it’s really good cos I might get sun cancer or summfink.

HG

I like the little blue pieces of paper that come out of the slot machines every month. You can use them to buy beer.

I simply like it here.

I like it that I have learned something new everyday since the firt day I arrived here.

I like all the quirky questions I am asked nearly everyday.

(I have never had a better job, life style or learning experience that Taiwan has given me)

I wish to retract this whole stupid thread.

FUCK. FUCK. FUCK. FUCK. FUCK. FUCK. FUCK. :fume: :fume: :fume: :fume: :fume:

Just learned I have to cancel the two-week vacation we’ve been planning for the past half-year. It was gonna be great, seeing lots of family and friends, so many beautiful places, clean air, ocean, mountains, forest, great food, etc. We were gonna leave this weekend and my daughter has been excited as any of us, telling me daily how she looks forward to the airplane and the boat ride and seeing her cousin, etc.

But, BIG MAJOR PROJECT arose at work, leading to BIG meeting in three weeks, the boss is scared to death of the case, so I’ve been ordered to stay put and make sure everything’s under control. :fume: :fume: :fume: :fume: :fume: :fume:

Yea, yea maybe I can take a similar trip in the future. And maybe he’ll take this into account when its time to consider bonuses. But still :fume: :fume: :fume: :fume:

Gonna enjoy a few drinks tonight, that’s for sure.

Poor you. That’s rubbish. :frowning:

I honestly don’t know if I would be able to handle that. I think I might just say it was too late to cancel and that they would have to just fire me when I come back from my holiday.

Mind you, I think you care more about your job than I do. I’m probably already looking for an excuse to leave, lol.

Well, at least you gents aren’t part of the 10 percent that will be laid off. For that, you should count your blessings.

MT, why don’t you just send the wife and kids overseas?

I like it that my boss is in a different continent.
I like it that we ‘make stuff’, although I’ve never bumped into anyone who owns anything I’ve made.
I like it that back home I would just be another engineer, here I am running the entire show.
I like it that I don’t have to call in sick or there is no one to moan when I am late.
I like it that I solve problems.
I especially like the fact I earn a US wage, and spend it on a TW living.

I dislike the fact I just took a 5 day vacation, first in 18mths.
I dislike the fact that my phone rings all hours of the day and night.
I really dislike when production stops and you have to quickly make a ‘judgement call’.
I really really dislike that I have to stop writing this post and get back to work!!!

I like that my workday doesn’t start until 10am (or later).
I like that my work is seasonal - I have lots of flexibility to take days off during the “slow season”.
I like that when I’m done for the day, I’m done.
I like that I’m constantly learning.
I like that I can surf the net at work and it’s not monitored or blocked.
I like that my job is challenging enough to keep me interested but easy enough to keep me sane.

I hate that my boss is a dictatorial asshole.
