I found two geckos on two different occasions while hiking on a mountain. They both seem to be the same species and I found them both living in same bamboo trees. The problem is, I don’t know what they want to eat. I have given them small crickets, but they haven’t touched those (maybe they are too big for their mouths). I also have fed them meal worms with some success. I thought of mosquitoes, but I don’t have any in my apt (thank god).
On the bamboo trees I noticed a lot of little, black ants. Is it possible that this kind of gecko feeds on ants? When I researched geckos I’ve never seen ants as a food source for geckos.
I do know some things about them and I am trying to find out more things about them. Thanks for your opinion, though. (Please, no more “let them go” comments )
I think it’s a Kikuchi’s gecko. fairly common in Taiwan, Lanyu, and other nearby islands, but endemic to Taiwan.
They would not like ants, but softer sweeter insects. Ants are hard and taste BAD. From my observations of geckos, they like fairly small soft insects about 1/3 the size of their mouth. That would include small moths, mosquitoes, fruitflies, drainflies, leafhoppers, bugs, small spiders, maybe a caterpillar or two, meal worms (small ones), etc. Small geckos are hard to keep in cages.
That’s very much unlike frogs (especially bullfrogs) that eat basically anything big enough to still fit in their mouth, including geckos.
let them go, mate. get a specialist larger gecko if you want.
I agree. Please let them go. Don’t complain that I have this opinion, btw, I’m not criticising you, just trying to suggest what is best for the lizards.
They’re not rare in Taiwan, you’ll sometimes hear them calling outside your home, or find them crawling around the wall at night. They can cope quite well by themselves, eating insects (cockroaches, mosquitoes especially). One time I saw one with a cockroach half swallowed in its gob. It only ate the head, the rest must have been too hard, and spat out the rest.
I hope someone else can give you information about what they eat, what species exactly, etc…but here is some general info: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gecko
there are 2000+ species
Geckos are lizards belonging to the family Gekkonidae, found in warm climates throughout the world. They range from 1.6cm to 60cm.
Geckos are unique among lizards in their vocalizations, making chirping sounds in social interactions with other geckos.
Food must be alive, and small enough to fit between the eyes. Yes, that is really, really tiny.
Many gecko enthusiasts buy cricket eggs, hatch them themselves, and then feed to the geckos at one or two days old. It is quite an involved procedure.
In my gecko herding attempt, a house gecko caught at work, I carefully picked the smallest crickets out of a massive bin at the pet store, only to be rewarded as you were - nothing was eaten. The crickets were just too big. I wound up having to release the gecko, who was short a couple days of feeding that it would have had left to fend on its own.
So here is another “just let it go” comment.
Ps - I agree about the ants. Anyway, they fight back. Wouldn’t want to subject anything to that.
Take them back where you got them, and let them go.
Just letting them go where you live might not be good enough if they have specific environmental requirements.
If that’s inconvenient, it’ll maybe remind you not to do it again.
Agree… why dont you get a stray instead? i can tell you what they eat !!!.. dont know about geckos…
but i know there is someone giving one leopard gecko in adoption, i think is a captive breed gecko… why dont u try one of those !!
After enough research and effort spent to obtain small prey for my geckos, I decided to act on their best behalf and release them in to the wild. Hopefully, they made a love connection and their love child will one day leave the simple jungle life and decide to head for the city, eventually finding my open window and making a home for himself inside my apartment. Until that day I will go to the pet store and check out my other options. For those of you lucky enough to have geckos naturally living inside your home, be thankful for them.
Nice one Hope they make lots of gecko babies who will come to visit you. I always think animals are best observed in their natural habitat. The fact that they’ll run away (or go extinct … sigh) just when you get up close makes them all the more interesting.

Anyone have any suggestions?
I am amazed you even posted that on Forumosa.com However, I do more or less agree with the other posters that they are best left where they are if you do not know what to feed them; although, I have on occassion kept non threatened species from the wild as pets.
By the way at present I keep frogs. So far I have found them fairly easy to keep as there are plenty of prey items available in local pet shops. Worms, small fish etc etc
It is quite fun and rewarding.
To my pleasant surprise, when I arrived home tonight after work, I found a gecko climbing on my door. I thought he might slip under my doorway when I approached, but he hid behind some shoes instead. Weird, considering I’ve never seen any geckos near my apartment building.

Thanks for your help Forumosa.
