Watch a Scottish TV show Rab C. Nesbitt! (from Govan Glasgow)

It even comes with sub titles so us English speakers can understand it, - hilarious

Cockney.

Indeed. A lot of Celts/Picts from the bog think that way about proper English, especially the domestic help like your momma.

Whether it is Canada or the Irish, I am very good at criticizing the people I lived among.

You lived among them and still manage to consider them ā€œpeopleā€ ? A true humanitarianā€¦

American here. UK accents sometimes give me fits. Irish, too. Scottish, Manc, Liverpool, Newcastle, seemingly anywhere up north. Welsh English, though, that too sometimes give me fits. Best thing ever on tv is closed caption.

Worst though is probably like @ironlady points out, Indian subcontinent. If spoken in a high-pitched monotone and at speed then there are times I have only a vague idea what they meant. I feel like an idiot as I pause to rewind and parse what I just heard.

Glaswegian
Yorkshire
African American

I felt like Margaret Meade.

A thick scottish accent for sure. Canā€™t think of any other native accents Iā€™ve had considerable difficulty with

I remember when there was a kiwi couple in the customs queue next to mine
Officer: So you live in Auckland
Couple (in unison): Yiss!

Quebec French is pretty horrible. Sounds like they have a speech impediment. Prefer the sing-song French of France, especially from the South (e.g., Marseilles).

Then again, I think a lot of Quebecois are racist, tribalist, provincial, and anti-semites to boot. These tones are often evident in Mordecai Richler`s writings of Quebec and in the pronouncements of their politicians (e.g., Parizeau in 1995 blaming the ethnic vote).

Might have to change my opinion. It appears that in actual fact I struggle with all Welsh accents (except possibly Richard Burtonā€™s).

No idea if this guy is accurate or not because I can barely understand anything.

I donā€™t have trouble understanding most accents, except for the Glasgow accent. I donā€™t see how anyone can understand that accent.

I always wondered how a linguist would explain the similarities between a Boston Massachusetts accent, and some Australian accents?

One day I heard a famous American blogger who lives here in Taiwan say that all the American accents could be found in one or another place of England. Whether or not this is true, I donā€™t know, I personally think that that canā€™t be, but there might be some true to it, which could also answer your question.
