What foods are missing?

I know that there are certain nutrients that are missing in the diet here that we need for our bodies and I have been working hard on working them into my diet. I thought it would help to make a thread where everyone could contribute things they have noticed lack in the diet here and easy ways to incorporate them into our dailly eating habbits (I am such a dirty hippie, I swear).

My list thus far:
Wheat
Bran
Yogurt
tomatos
olive oil (brain fat/ antioxidant)
Avacado (and most of the other brain fats)

missing vitamins:
Vitamin C
Calcium
Magnesium

I have started getting the wheat bran yogurt simply by going to jason’s, buying it, and choking it down every morning. But I have yet to find how to get more tomato in my diet (and this is actually more important to men as it lowers bloos fat levels, increases heart health, and lowers chances of prostate cancer), olive oil, or avocado… (mexican food…)

Anything to add?

Have a look at this list of foods that heal, but I wouldn’t rather make incremental changes. Incorporate one new food into your diet so that your body doesn’t reject the new diet after a two days. Another important consideration is to cut out foods that kill. However, since health is more than just what we eat, it is most important to consider all factors affecting health including exercise and the mind/body connection.

Hey SuchAFob,

Are you talking about preparing foods at home or eating out? If you wish to buy olive oil for cooking at home, you can definitely get some. I have a big bottle from the Geant store and I don’t think it was any more expensive than it would be at home.

There is regular (plain) Yoplait yogurt at the Geant I go to. None of those nasty jelly chunks. I also like the drinking yogurt that you can get at 7-11. It’s a little sugary but provides a nice, on-the-go yogurt blast.

For tomato intake, there are lots of restaurants that serve decent pasta with red sauce. Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve eaten a raw tomato in a number of months. You can still benefit from cooked tomatos too though.

yoghurt, yes … healthy, nutricious … but it needs to be live yoghurt not the crap they sell all over the place.

Most healthy foods you can buy in Taiwan, but Taiwanese don’t eat them often.

Actually in taiwan you could eat as healthy as at home … cereals they are actually not as healthy as you think … anyway … wheat germ you can buy at any supermarket … so is oat bran … and many others.

Mymy … calcium is not lacking in the diet here … tofu has a lot of it … so has milk … and most milkpowders are vitamin enriched … even in the bread they use vit.C I guess.

my favorite breakfast … whole wheat or multigrain bread with grapeseed oil a layer of tomato past and some cheese, avocado slices (the real thing)

Unfortunately some of the foods that are missing in our diet are not available in the modern diet, no matter how well we shop. A wide variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, tree saps, mushrooms, etc. are necessary. This is what our primitive ancesters got and what our bodies are programmed to use. The only way to get some of these now is by supplementing.

A primary area is glyconutrients. These monosacharides are the “code” for the operating system of our bodies, particualy the immune system. This new science of glycomics has only evolved in the last 15 years as microscopes have only now become powerful enough to see what is really happening on the surface of each cell. It was thought that cells communicate through proteins, but it is now known that a combination of proteins and carbohydrates are necessary.

A lack of these sugars means that the immune cells may not recognize other cells. When this happens, they will either attack the cells, which, if they are good cells will result in an auto-immune disease like asthma, arthritis, etc. , or if they leave bad cells alone, cancer can develop. When these sugars are replaced in the diet, the body can heal and repair itself as it is designed to do. So- these are foods that the body is needing and expecting in the diet, as opposed to pharmaceuticals or even herbs that some naturopaths use like pharmaceuticals to address symptoms only.

Mainstream science is seriously looking at this and if you put the word “glycoprotein” into the search engine of PubMed, the doctors’ medical library in New York, you will find over 390,000 papers on this! This is because the pharmaceutical industry is trying to copy the sugars to that they can get patents and sell them as drugs (with side effects). They are not in the business of providing the natural molecules (the real food). These monosacharides are available as supplements however.

Do give us a call (09-1709-4444) because we are only in town for another week. We’re staying at the Far Eastern Plaza. We have some literature that you may want to see (including how these has helped with fungal problems). We may be able to point you in the right direction.

Check the science out by looking at the video clips on www.glycoscience.org.

Good luck!
