What game are you playing?

I started streaming in in 2020 at 78. I am now 81. I am a widow with 6 children, 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. I am loving streaming and meeting so many people from all over the world. We provide a friendly and non toxic stream while I play world of warcraft and chat.

I can’t play that on the MRT sadly

I started playing that but found it too socially-unsettling after the school kids being whipped in the dungeon and the sexualisation of that Ann character.

Bit too edgy Japanese for me.

Since it’s social commentary not glorification I think it’s ok to depict especially in an animated format it’s probably the best way to approach/reveal this dark side of Japanese society. The whole game is a commentary on Japan. It’s surprisingly deep. I’m also a big fan of the attention to Jungian archetypes

The same company made that Catherine game, which is very heavy on the sexual imagery, not sure what social commentary that game is trying to make. Just all a bit hentai for me

Then there is the third semester expansion where Katsumi/Sumaire gets bound by tentacles and stuff…

Japanese likes to sexualize anime… even kid ones.

They are above age of consent in Japan. IIRC it used to be 14 but they planned to raise it up to 16.

I’ve got a feeling it’s currently 13, could be wrong though. 14 is fine for sure in Japan. I hope that’s not a loophole…

Yeah, it’s obviously legally ok, it’s a very large and popular game, PEGI rated and what-not. Just makes me uncomfortable beside the obvious point of it being part of the plot, but then I’m an old prude.

Even Doraemon gets sexualized to a very small extent, and we’re talking about G rated anime here.

Anything for teenagers gets more and more sexualized, and adult stuff is basically full on porn (hentai and stuff).

Those who missed can get it again.

Tears of the Kingdom has been a blast to play so far. Anyone else?

As a lifelong gamer, I really hate being that guy, but I can’t get into Tears of the Kingdom. I’ve played enough of it to know beyond a doubt that it’s objectively a technical masterpiece and I can see where all the fuss is coming from, but I just find it weird and overwhelming. For whatever reason, even though I loved Zelda as a kid, I haven’t played a Zelda game since Wind Waker, so I’m just not used to this enormously “open” world where you can basically do whatever you want and I was just getting stuck and frustrated all the time, so I stopped with the intention of coming back to it later with a clear head.

It’s a good game, especially for the price.

Oh and it’s on Gamepass too, so if you have that, you don’t have to buy it.

The story is really good.

For some reason, I just don’t like Zelda games since Nintendo 64. I loved the original Zelda and A Link to the Past (the one for the SNES), but after that I just can’t seem to like it.

I know what you mean. I loved them all up to the N64, but by Wind Waker on the GameCube, I was getting annoyed by the tedious dungeons, and the plots compared to some other RPGs at the time were underwhelming, so I just grew out of Zelda. The hype around Tears caught me this time round.

I couldn’t even play the N64 version. I think the issue is that 3D Zelda’s are deep in the uncanny valley, and the world just looked really empty compared to the 2D version. I think they should bring back 2D Zelda. Plus after about 3 games the story of Zelda just looks the same. The world is in chaos and bad because Gannon screwed everything up, so every Zelda is defeat Gannon. Oh and Gannon kidnapped princess Zelda for some neferious reason, and link must rescue her. It gets old after a while.

At least Metroid don’t try to do that.

Elden Ring has been a delightful distraction in recent months. I’ve kind of stopped leveling (lv 150, and just shy of 200 hours) and haven’t been moving the story too far after reaching Crumbling Farum Azula and beating the Godskin Duo. Rather, I’m having a grand old time popping the small golden effigy, setting the summoning pools to Near and Far, then reading a book or pottering around online while I wait to get summoned. Any runes get poured into smithing stones.

The book I’m reading right now is called 50 Years of Text Games : From Oregon Trail to AI Dungeon. The author turned a series of in-depth blog posts into a 500+ page book which he funded through Kickstarter. Fascinating stuff, particularly the earlier games which had to be designed with such strict hardware limitations in mind.

Articles typically have links to the games themselves.

I’m also struggling to get into it. I thought it was just me. Part of it is the building mechanics are really frustrating to use. You have to keep going back to the inventory to restart the ability and things don’t snap together properly which would be fine except it can be annoying to rotate items properly.

Maybe I’ll change my mind if I play a bit longer but so far I’m not the biggest fan of all the crafting
