What is a "good" salary in Taipei City? POLL

Well such polls makes me feel if i would ever manage to earn like what 99% of people here says they earn ha. You guys are super rich. 100K and its less for some? i am shocked

You can work your way up. I started on 32k per month.
I was paid two months on sign up and my Chinese was so bad I actually thought for a little bit that I was on 64k/mth. Then I didn’t get a pay cheque for the 2nd mth That was a shocker :neutral_face: (and then they asked me why I was quitting after six months while pointing to my miserable colleagues …:smile:).

After that I doubled my pay and stuck on a similar salary for years of grafting and then it started going up significantly as I moved around and gained experience and studied Chinese .

You know it’s possible to get MUCH higher pay but you will have to work your way up usually. You want to know how long it could take and how many hours you want to put in before complaining about other people being ‘rich’ ?

It could take thousands and thousands of hours of work and study. And after you get higher pay you still have to get up everyday and put in the graft for what are heightened expectations.

depends on your job and situation. For a student on a scholarship, I’d say 40k is a good wage for 20 hr per month on campus job.

Generally speaking…You can do it Tando…Generally speaking.

There’s a thread somewhere of sharing salary anonymously.

Most people seemed to be earning between 50,000 to 70,000 a month. With some 100,000+ and some lower–I assume part time/students.

Ya, same with lights and cars. You are right, but there is also probbaly a good math equation based o n the building.your into run max efficiency. I know lot of people who just turn on for an hour while going to sleep, that would certainly save far more than running it the entire night.

But how could one possibly save for retirement on this?

It takes less than 15 KW for me to run my AC at 26 degree from 7pm at night to 8am the next morning in the middle of Summer. Typical it is closer to 12KW. This translates to ~30 NTD per day on my bill. Not sure if it is worth it to try to save 20-25 NTD per day and not be able to get a good night sleep.

I pay 15k rent a month for an apartment in Ximen. Old scuzzy building, but the actual place is fairly modern. I had never really considered the fact that I’m pretty lucky insofar as the amount I pay every month hasn’t changed for almost 10 years. Can’t help but imagine 25k would get you a palace in Taipei, even though I know that the reality is somewhat different.

Realistically speaking, for me a good salary would be 50-60k with an opportunity to grow, which would give me some flexibility to save money. But these days, I’m getting offers like 38-40k. Taipei is an expensive place to live, and when I try to explain this to the HR, they usually play the “we have a lot of candidates” card.

Ya its not about money. I was replying to nz about turning on and off. Using 2kw for one hour is far less than your 15kw. Thats all i was saying. If people dont need it (like those that turn it cold and have ultra thick blankets), it is still better to just turn on and off, not keep on all day.

For me i dont use ac for pollution reasons wih our energy production in taiwan, not due to saving money. Electricity is fairly cheap here compared to many places.

100k for one salary is high, but if you look at household income, that is what many middle class families make.
if both husband and wife make ~50k, that’s 100k a month.

It’s a bit silly to call 60-70k “good” when it’s merely the average. Probably even lower than average.

You must hang around some successful Taiwanese people.

many people make good money, at least in Taipei. if you look at the number of nice cars, iPhones, apple watches, LV bags… a lot of discretionary income …

I am not. There are stats on average wages and Taipei would be higher than the average because it’s the capital.

Okay, sorry to be a smart arse. I’m just genuinely surprised because it completely goes against everything I experienced out there. Do you have these stats to share? And are they referring to the mean average or the median average? If it’s the mean, then it’s no longer surprising because that’s why some people claim that London has an average salary that’s way higher than what you actually see in real life.

A good salary is when your making more than the person your sitting next to at work.

It is mean but mean doesn’t make it super good even with very rich people skewing the average whether it’s London or elsewhere. No one making the mean average salary would say it’s enough.

As others have said, a new, properly insulated modern building with a top-of-the-line AC unit does wonders. Also, paying the actual Taipower rate and not the made-up landlord rate helps.
