actually, strictly speaking, a tomato IS a fruit. any device that a plant uses to grow its seeds in and tempt animals to eat them is a fruit, such as a swollen sugar-laden pericarp like an apple, or an enlarged ovary as in a strawberry. as is a pumpkin or a cucumber or a bitter melon.
by the same token, beans and peas are fruits too, but the actual arrangement of the fruit cover and the seeds is special in the legumes and they are generally not considered fruits, besides, they’re not too sweet either. nuts are fruits too, or fruit seeds like almonds.
the only real vegetables are the leaves, stalks or roots that we eat, like cabbage, broccoli counts as it is flower material, carrot, turnip, potato, etc.
but, with all terminology being based on usage, you can really say whatever you want in these post-modernist times. as long as you repeat it often enough it becomes the truth. just look at all those politicians…

The difference 'tween Vegi and a fruit is the seeds. If it has seeds it is “officially” a fruit.
