What is wrong with Canada (Nearly 40% of Taiwanese immigrants to Canada have left in 20 years)

What makes them leave Canada? Nearly half come back here, seems high number.

My theory is this: the majority of Taiwanese who immigrated to Canada, especially in the 1990s, did not immigrate to Canada as such. They mostly immigrated to Vancouver, which is a specific part of the country with milder weather, excellent Chinese food, and—here is the key point—a lack of a diverse economy to provide jobs for all the newcomers that arrive.

Filipinos and Chinese and Koreans will move—and do move—to wherever there are jobs. You can find large groups of these communities all across Canada.

Taiwanese, for reasons only they can answer, were not interested in doing that, and instead elected to return to Taiwan, where most Taiwanese Canadians now live, as there are more jobs (or other sources of income) for them here.

One other factor I should mention: since the 1990s, I feel that Taiwan has gotten better and better. I cannot say the same thing about Canada, which has some strong points but also where costs continue to race ahead of salaries.

Taiwanese move there, realize they downgraded their life, and bounce, either back home or to places like Australia.

I have found Taiwanese to have a lot of global flexibility and mobility. Taiwanese people seem to be ok with moving to where they think the opportunities are.

Another thing is Taiwanese are able to get a 2nd passport. Koreans for example like my mom had to give up her Korean passport to gain American citizenship.

yes, too cold ! I found Helsinki and Estonia to be warmer to my surprise.

Also some Taiwanese, told me they do not like recent immigrants in Canada, which is somewhat racist.

So . . . as immigrants, they were surprised to find other immigrants there too.

And expensive. And waits for health care.

If they’ve got the passport, they can always go back and forth…

Funny, I know “old stock” Canadians who feel the same way…

I wouldn’t want to live in Canada because of the weather and cost of living. The nice places like Vancouver are very competitive.

As an immigrant to Taiwan, let’s just say I’m not here for Taipei’s weather. :joy:

The costs / income issue though is definitely a thing. It’s one reason I’ve stayed in Taiwan—not unlike those Taiwanese Canadians.

Yeah, and Vancouver is not terribly different, but still the best Canada has. I’d have to make at least 200k ntd per month to live in Taipei, but that seems unlikely because plenty of Taiwanese people seem happy to live there on far less. Not sure what’s wring with them

Immigrants not liking the new wave of immigrants has been the story of North America. Whether it’s the Chinese, Irish, Italians, etc.

Right. Please give me a heads up when Vancouver summers are consistently in the mid to high 30s!

A lot of rain, and the temp gets that high in the summer. Not as consistently as Taiwan, but not terribly different as far as weather goes.

Maybe it’s just that a lot of first generation immigrants anywhere eventually move back to their home country. A very substantial percentage of first generation Mexican immigrants have always returned home voluntarily although I don’t think the numbers are all that solid until fairly recently. In the 20th century, 1/3 of Irish emigrants returned home even though Ireland was pretty poor most of that time. Home has a powerful pull.

What’s probably more important to Canada is how many of the children stay in Canada. I would guess the percentage is pretty high. Anecdotally, I know or have met many Taiwanese who have returned to Taiwan. Their kids usually stay in Australia, the U.S., etc.

I left after 15 years, Canada is not a good place to live right now.

This is one of the reasons.

Italian immigrants often return home as well. Very common.

Yeah it’s perfectly normal for people from more unique small homelands that are actually decent places to live anyway. Taiwanese emigrants tend to be richer than most emigrants so they have more choices as well and Taiwan made it easy for them to come and go . My old boss was the opposite his parents loved it there but he hated it especially the food and the women , I guess not being very tall cut his options dramatically.

A lot of the business migrants that I helped immigrate to Aus Canada NZ in the 80’s and 90’s often mmoved back or had businesses in China. Many moved back to Taiwan.
Whereas those who immigrated as skilled migrants tended not to return as employee salaries and benefits were much better overseas.
