What just happened? Everything is different

Not sure what has changed but they have become more noticeable, maybe they have switched to lighter adds that become prominent in the dark modes, but making them darker would be prominent in the lighter modes, not sure if there is the option to change the adds depending on the mode used.

Also the adds between messages seam to have got bigger, its a combination of both these made me block them all.

Right now, there are ads between messages (posts) within the topic threads and there are larger ads at the bottom of topic threads. Nothing was changed with the latter. The graphical banners have been removed from between messages and from the top of categories (forums)

The ads between messages take up more space. They look more like regular posts – but not exactly. I can make them look darker on light themes and lighter on dark themes (or did you mean the opposite so they stand back instead of stand out?)

The ads between messages may be forum dependent. So the high traffic forums will definitely get more ads and more variety of ads than the low traffic forums. I’ll list the top 10 forums below

Yes, ads between messages are very noticeable. For me it’s less about the colour, more about the high frequency (every 10 replies or so it feels) and the repetitiveness - different ads could be interesting in a way, but seeing the same ad time and again while scrolling doesn’t increase interest in the product for me.

I’m reminded of the old adage ā€œif it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.ā€ Today it seems people are trying to create solutions for problems that don’t exist.

(That’s not directed at any admins/mods who are trying their best with managing ads… just a general observation about how it’s constantly getting more difficult to cut through the clutter and navigate forums nowadays… they’re slowly starting to look more like social media feeds)

Cheers. It’s actually every 5 replies, believe it or not - so if you think it’s more than that, I guess I’m a little ahead? I think discussion these days tend to go longer faster than before, so I will look at increasing this limit (and, thereby, lower the frequency)

It’s still early days yet – I finally figured out a couple ways to make these ads easily and how to use the built-in ad function a little better. This is why I finally retired use of the graphical banners.[1]

Thank you for this feedback. I thought the recent changes have made the forums more accessible (direct jumps to forums, leaning more on tags to find topics of interest, more prominent search form, among other things). However, these are driven primarily by how I personally use the forums. I am not as active as many others, so I am interested to here how the forums can be made easier for others to use. If you are familiar with Discourse, specific feature requests from that website will be sincerely appreciated

  1. A lot has been simplified in the past 2 weeks in this way - I’ve long wanted to stop using Google’s Ad Manager, and I’ve finally pulled that trigger because I see a way to manage ads here that doesn’t consume so much time ā†©ļøŽ

this
I used to not notice them much, just the occasional one would catch my attention, so I didn’t mind letting them roll in the background.

I know its the opposite of what an add is designed to do, but when they start to become a distraction they get blocked, I’m sure thats not just me

Got it. Still playing with this for now, so your reactions and any suggestions are very welcome.

Btw, I finally discovered Taiwan-based affiliate programs, so I hope to see more that are specifically Taiwan-related. And more iHerb ads, too  That will increase the variety of ads. The built-in ad function, however, is pretty manual, even after some of the workflow improvements I’ve done. So, expect this to continue to evolve - at least until the end of May.

What if we just plaster Kuo & Kuo business cards on every ad?

Currently my main issue with the ads is I keep thinking I’ve reached the bottom of the thread but nope, there’s more below the ad.

But I’m not sure if this is an easy problem to solve, since I encounter the same issue on a whole bunch of different news websites.

Do you mean that making the ads look more distinctive might make you check further below it?

In my opinion, if the add was this big and not too in your face, every 5th post would be fine, you would see it but it wouldn’t interrupt the flow.

FWIW ads on here seem fine to me, at least you don’t have to uncheck permission for 2145 ā€œlegitimite interestā€ partners individually, and then fumble to try and stop some 2 minute video for a superhero movie playing everytime you change screen.

For the lack of this shitfest, I appreciate Forumosa.

The theme changed for me. Something’s are like a grey-ish brown now, I think they used to be blue. Can I roll it back?

I’m sorry about that, I was making some changes to the themes again today.

You can easily change the theme back by opening up the ā€œhamburgerā€ menu (it looks like 3 horizontal lines stacked on top of each other) – depending on whether you or in desktop or mobile, it will be on the upper left and upper right, respectively. When you open the sidebar menu, look at the bottom of it to find the theme selector. Choose Classic or Darkmosa

If you cannot find the hamburger menu, then open up your preferences look for the Interface menu. You will see a dropdown list to choose Classic or another theme. Click this link below if you run into any trouble finding the Interface submenh in Preferences

But it looks like you’ve made changes to the Classic theme, so all the previously blue bits are now gray? That doesn’t seem to be fixable on our end?

I’m also not a fan of the new theme. I find it too pale and boring. I need more color in my life. :rainbow:

You are right. I did change the Classic theme in this case because I didn’t think that bright blue color was in line with the color palette I wanted to follow.

Since I can now see that there is a blue shade there, I’ll give that a shot. But going forward, I am more inclined to set up a few more themes[1], so you could switch to those eventually

I’ll try out that blue shade now

same here, the grey stuff doesn’t give enough highlight to draw attention to what it is intended for

When it went Grey, I thought I finally got banned :man_shrugging:

It’s back to blue now, thanks. Not to be overly picky, but this shade of blue is a bit less vibrant than before! :smiling_face_with_tear:

A few more themes might be nice!
