One and done…
Outside of natural disasters. The Taiwan go bag is largely needed for Chinese crimes against humanity threats. Which makes me wonder, how many of those go bags’ materials are from the very country that is threatening this country (Taiwan) to need such a bag in the first place??? Curious on the intelligence/ethics vs greed/fear mongering rational.

Unfortunately, we are all guilty of giving China power over our lives because everything is made in China.
The government of Hualien was giving out BOBs and was accused of profiteering from the fear. So there’s no way to win.
For wartime, the Formosan Academy people do have some good specific suggestions. I gather most stuff should be made in Taiwan… ish.
For stay in, Bug In, I like the Japanese housewife advice:
There is an easy way to win. Stop buying stuff labeled made in china. Tell the companies you support you won’t buy if made from chjna. Lobby them. Lobby the government.
At least at labelmlevel, there is no justification. It sends a message to the owners of customer demands and affects sales/marketing which in turn affect production and sourcing.
I don’t buy the “no hope” laziness excuses one bit. At least try.
More importantly don’t fund the very reason you are at risk by buying the protection gear you need/want from that exact oppression
literally nothing could be more moronic ![]()
Imagine jews buying gas masks from nazis, a wild thought.
If there is an option to buy made in Taiwan, that’s the goal, that’s the best choice. Next up anything else including made in Timbuktu. As long as there’s a choice.
But the West especially has painted itself in a corner, leaving no alternative to consumers in most products. I’d dare to say we in Taiwan have a range and awareness.
It’s like the poor Syrian refugees getting Chinese life jackets, made from a material that actually absorbed more water and sank them to the bottom of the ocean instead of keeping them afloat…
BTW, Hualien government was criticized for “fear mongering”, not for any China stuff in the packages, that’s not what I meant.
Even the Japanese manga artist came out recently and told people she might be wrong about the date but what is important is to be prepared for an emergency anytime.
Wow unbelievable
It was sponge, cheap sponge. No problem as long as it was not in use, which unfortunately was not the case in overcrowded vessels full of women and children…
And most people buy whatever safety stuff they can afford, whatever seems ok. It takes experience, use to realize if it is good or not. It can be as simple as a whistle. I bought one that has already broken down. It seemed ok, stainless steel and all. Won’t attract a cab, let alone help in an emergency.
Which is why one should rotate, test the equipment. Lamps, batteries, also have a limited lifespan.
Once hostilities start China will be encouraging all foreigners to evacuate so your “go bag” should be geared towards surviving a week or two of camping out around Taoyuan International Airport waiting for a flight home.
I’m not talking about made in Taiwan. I am only talking specifically about buying survival gear from he exact place causing you to need survival gear. That’s pretty much the definition of retarded
despite what people think, there are options to buy elsewhere outside China. Might cost more. Might have corrupt businesses committing label fraud.
End of the day, it is essentially an oxymoron to buy things to protect us from China’s oppression and murder threats that literally state made in china on the label. As a bare minimum, I don’t think this is a controversial point to be made. Like if jews bought Made in Germany in 1943. Makes zero sense to do this.
Extra socks & basic hygiene items will allow you to be much more comfortable
baby wipes are gold
please keep in mind that ounce’s equal pounds, and pounds equal pain, so consider the weight of your pack and kit, and that you may be on your feet for extended periods of time
Agreed. That’s why the BOB for say China attacks/flee to the airport is different from.the BOB in case say of 8 pointer earthquake damaging your home beyond safety levels or typhoon floods your home and neighborhood so must evacuate to a government shelter/elsewhere. And that is different from a battle/guerrilla beyond BOB setup.
Currently the most popular one by public acclaim is the catastrophic earthquake scenario.
The news was saying that the portable generator and solar panels are sold out. One distributor was saying that this months they had more sales than on previous 4 years.
The advantage of the emergency being earthquake/tsunami/typhoon etc related is taiwna sibrich, will send helicopters adap and fix roads and infrastructure right quick. So those types of emergency preparation cna be far more simple because we are so privileged to live in such a developed and rich country.
War, on the other hand, takes all that away and is at least manyvyears long, if not just straight existential.
I am worried for less about natural disasters. Keep extra food, water and all that. I wknt be displaced and totally fucked that badly. At least compared to a war scenario. Which is far more terrifying, and also about as likely as a big earthquake destroying the entire country of Taiwan. I think some perspective is important on how taiwan works.
A massive earthquake, as bad as it is, is fixed relatively simply. If that is my worry, I’m more worried about nuclear and chemical facilities being destroyed and contaminating large tracts of land which will no doubt cause many health issues and food shortages.
In a hot country, I would focus on filtration. Both air and liquid. And medical supplies for infections. A generator and solar is far less important in an emergency than a way to not be contaminated. If we need a fridge or ax dur8ng an emergency, it’s just not actually an emergency haha.
Indeed a quake or typhoon does not seem that awful in Taiwan due to its preparation on this regard. Definitely not like the old country where we were left without power or water for days, weeks. However, there may be damage to infrastructure, like occasional blackouts, and hence preparations must be made.
I agree that war is the worst calamity. To make matters worse, in other places, caravans of refugees flee on foot or by any other means - unless those means become targets, like train stations during Ukraine war’s initial push. We can’t even do try this.
Airports I am sorry to say are the first to go. Ports might be a bit more porous but that cuts both ways.
Taiwan’s infrastructure will try to push through but hospitals are targets, parks or any open space will become targets, cities are targets, and finding food and shelter for so many people will become chaos pretty soon after the bombs fall. No communication available. No power, no water. No way out. Very bad outcome.
Indeed, a Geiger counter would be useful. That’s why I support getting rid of the obvious nuclear facilities/targets. Chemical spills are a greater concern down South close to chip factories or chemical plants. Or if any weapon in China’s arsenal is not as per the UN accords, like chemical or cluster bombs or any other unimaginable. If affordable, a properly fitted gas mask should be on the list to buy too.
Again, as the guy in the Academia Formosana says, there’s strength in numbers. In order to survive, we must organize, don’t panic, stay together, be prepared, and act according to a plan.
Agreed totally. This is why, in my humble opinion, the real preparations ought to be for war. Anything one prepares for a Chinese invasion will literally cover any issue caused by a natural disaster. In terms of self preparations. Obviously the government ought to take water and food security WAY more serious, regardless of whether it’s natural or human made disaster.
My only main take home point is stop funding the actual enemy that is causing us to even need to worry about war and bug out bags. China.
Truly, for the love of all the gods I think are fake human constructs built to control weak minded people, don’t pay your enemy! There is literally nothing more insane than actually sending ones hard earned $ towards the only legitimate threat towards one’s life, family, community, assets and country as a whole. It is beyond retarded thinking to do so. Even if it might sound rude to point this out. Frankly, nothing could possibly be more obvious. To do otherwise is to welcome in the destruction and oppression. It’s not even karma at that point, it’s legitimate funding of tyranny. With the availability of information now adays, it’s just plain ol being complicit. Whether we want to admit it or not, doesn’t take away from the basic facts.
Taiwan will be every man for himself once once the grocery store shelves are bare. Food, fire, and fluids are the only things you’ll be able to place your trust in then.
Agree
I do my best to avoid purchasing from ccp. I check labels often, and even factor this in to my work regarding large transactions.. most other Americans, unfortunately seem to be blissfully ignorant on the issue. Only recently our government has been pushing a decoupling from ccp products, but we still rely on them for far too much in America
I’m an old Corporal, & I’m interested in networking with more Taiwanese to see if I can be of any support in this regard.. I’d like to come visit
You’re biggest problem if hostilities break out will be Taiwanese people trying to collect the bounty that the PLA puts on the head of foreigners who refuse to evacuate.
No, once the internet fails, it will be chaos and panic. Run for the hills! ![]()
“The 7-11 signs are going out all over Taiwan, we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.”
