Ironman,
We’ve had seednet for over a year and they’re great. I’m not sure what connection deal we have speed-wise, but it costs a little over 800NT a month. The only time things slow down much is when I’m seeding a lot on uTorrent and running several applications simultaneously. Seednet has a very patient, helpful English (real English) phone service - not that I’ve needed it for anything other than routine enquiries.
The previous lot - FarEastern(something) was complete bollocks. I wish we’d made the switch a lot earlier.
Speedtest results:
Phillipines - down 1581/up 206
Tokyo - down 1698/ up 208
Singapore - down 1190/ up 215
Seattle - down 1217/ up 154
LA - down 1336/ up 172
London - down 1021/ up 100
NZ - down 1570/ up 162
Any idea why my 8M line is so slow? I’ve only got one computer connected. Also I think it’s a little strange that my speed is faster to the US (San Jose) than Japan, a result opposite from most others here…

This is my my digs way up in Alishan…
The cities should be much faster seeing as we are far away from main hubs.[/b]

you seem to have a problem twocs. With my 2M I’m getting 1.095Mbs download from Yokohama and 1.109Mbs from San Jose. You should run Adaware, Spybot, and ccleaner.
One thing I’ve noticed lately is that even after I do a full “clean” I’m getting hit by a lot of pings. I’m running PC-Cillin 2006 and the firewall logs are running into the megs per day. WTF???

It’s the upload that hurts the most. Updating stuff on my domain, or sending emails with attachments is PAINful.
Ok, now that I hav established my connection really does suck, is there anything I can do about it? Does complaining help or is it just case of ‘that’s the way it is’?

Like I said above, I’ve found that doing a clean with Spybot and ccleaner my connection is much faster. Particularly after using ccleaner the speed improvement is noticeable.
So Truant, what are you thinking about to this point on the upgrade idea? Thoughts?
My recommendation still is to go with HINET 8M. It’s about $1100/month which is reasonable, maybe even cheap, and it’s been a stable quick connection for me and my wife both doing P2P or on-line game stuff simultaneously on two computers…junkies that we are.
Everything goes through Chung-Hwa anyway, so you might as well belly right on up to the trough.

Well, a couple of things. I brought a brand new notebook home a couple of weeks ago and hooked it up right away. It was pretty slow, so I figured spyware/adware is having a minimal impact. I clean out that stuff every 2-3 weeks I guess.
I wanted to upgrade to the 8m deal, but when I got my colleague to call them up about it, they told me my area (Nankan) can only go up to 2m, so I went from 1 to 2 at that stage. That was about 6 months ago, and I see some of the Chunghua junction boxes around Taoyuan now have big “8m ADSL” posters on them, including on my street, so I might be in luck. But I see some people’s 8m connection does give much better than I got. That would peeve me.
And I was able to tweak my Internet settings to improve my speed using TZ-Connection-Booster. Be careful that you don’t get a connection booster that contains spyware, etc., but take it from me, you can see a difference if you use it. I’ve still got to figure out the upload settings…
