What to do about unfair/unethical employers?

So in Taiwan if you were discriminated or treated unfairly by your boss is there anything you can do about it? like if you were denied your job because of your race or religion… or harassed at work?

Would it be even worth trying to do something about it? Im not saying they should be allowed to do what they do, but it seems that for me anyway that its not worth it to make a fuss.

I was harassed at my current job. Last year a new teacher felt it was alright to graze his hand on my butt. I gave him a note in Chinese telling him to keep his hands of my ass. It stopped.

I’ve been denied jobs because of my race. What can I do in a country that does it to it’s own people and doesn’t follow the laws? What I’ve learned is to conduct yourself in such a way that doesn’t warrant such behavior, and if you still have to deal with it, then confront it in the style of the culture.

How are you going to change a culture?

It does happen, slowly. Britain is far less overtly sexist and racist than it was 30 years ago.

Not sure why the OP is asking a bunch of people who need a work permit to wipe their arses. It’s not as if we can take part in organised labour disputes or take part in legislative processes, so if a company advertises for ‘whites only’, all we can do is choose our own response to that. That one’s for Taiwanese people to deal with.

On an individual level, there’s always the CLA. And you can refuse to be disrespected or to disrespected others in these ways. Having said that, it’s easier to vote with your feet when you don’t have a work permit.

Two numbers I would recommend you keep in your wallet/purse:

TEALIT
02-2331-1289

Ministry of Education
International Community Service Hotline
0800-024-111

While I’m not very impressed with the forums on their website, the staff at TEALIT is very good at answering questions about employment, contracts, etc.
