What TV shows are you watching (2022)

,

Euphoria is one of the best things I’ve seen in ages.
The soundtrack is awesome, the cinematography is so good.
The second series is even better than the first.

I’m watching this now too. I just finished both seasons of Picard right before.

I stopped watching … 10 years ago? Back when they were on the farm, maybe just after they got to the prison. Imo, the comic it’s based on is much better.

At first, it was just too good to not watch, but now with COVID, we are too invested to stop and it’s a good reason to stay in.

That’s season 2-4ish. Which I finished in like…a week? Early seasons were hard to stop watching. I heard the comic is really good and some of messed up character traits were too much for TV.

Yeah, seek out the comics. Definitely mature fare, not “kids stuff” (as comics often get stereotyped as). Unlike her awful TV counterpart, Andrea is actually one of the best characters in the comics. Lori is great too. TV casting dropped the ball on them (but did a good job on Glenn and a couple others, I guess).

I really thought there could have been more to Andrea. Now I’m actually trying to remember how they wrote her off.

I read some Reddit episode recaps and lots of people saying the Governor was way worse in the comics and was dialed down for TV. Tbh, I can’t even imagine how much worse he could be lol

lol I agree 100% with those Reddit posts. His depravity in the TV show doesn’t compare to the comics. Read the comics, they’re worth it. (I remember when they did try to make the TV show as gruesome as the comics with the way Negan killed Glenn, there was viewer outrage so maybe TV audiences just aren’t ready).

Comic Carl, the son of the protagonist, had a lot more interesting shady moral decisions to make. Basically he decided to kill some “bad” kids cause he decided there was no way they could become “normal citizens”. Dont remember this being depicted as well in the tv series.

The fate of Glenn was spoiled really really early on for me in a YT comment when I had zero plans to watch the show. I just know Glen was a fan fave. Didn’t know the details, just knew the outcome, the near heart attacks I had from season 2-3 on…

I found the comics online and got through 3-4 issues. It’s interesting how things move a bit quicker and what the show left in, added or removed.

So much to dropped yesterday. Obiwan and Stranger Things 4.

Just finished ObiWan and hot damn they teased that lightsaber battle.

I thought the first two episodes were OK, but not great. So slow to get going - and it’s only six episodes total, I think? Ewan McGregor is great, as always, but, well, his charm and charisma weren’t enough to overcome the writing of the prequels. Despite the higher ratio of McGregor this time around, it still may not be enough.

The sadness he’s emitting, and sense of loss and post-war trauma: that’s fantastic. I also like the way they’re calling out that what happened to Anakin is partly Obi-Wan’s fault.

A few months ago, I’d have called the beginning of this series disappointing, but after Boba Fett, I wasn’t expecting much anyway. So … it’s meeting expectations.

Spoilers:

Plus, Leia is sometimes too annoying. And the timing and characters are weird - the Inquisitor was racing away from only a few rooftops away, but then gets there much later? The other Inquisitors are so cavalier about the insanely loose cannon under their command, in the Empire?! That seedy fake-Jedi makes such a massive turn-around to help, and in such a stupidly brave way? Plus Obi-Wan talks to one shady individual in a big city, and that shady individual knows exactly which building to enter in that big city to find a kidnapped girl?

I did love the call-backs / call-forwards to Luke in Return of the Jedi, with Obi-Wan hiding and knowing it’s the right thing to do, but wanting so much to not hide. I guess they’re trying to show a recovery for Obi-Wan, from an individual destroyed by the events of the prequels (not that we actually saw that happen to him in the prequels) to the wiser old man of A New Hope.

Here are the shows I’ve watched over the past month or so, from best to worst.

‘Severance’ 9.5/10. Brilliant concept, amazing acting… not a single average performance in the entire ensemble. 1 or 2 nitpicks keep it from a 10, but easily one of the best shows I’ve watched in years. Just watch it if you haven’t. I have no idea how they’ll do a second season, but I hope they maintain this high level of quality. Easily blows away everything else on Apple TV by a country mile.

‘Moon Knight’ 8.5/10. I liked this a lot. Oscar Isaac’s acting playing multiple personalities was terrific and the action scenes and mythology behind Moon Knight was a load of fun as well. Plus, it was pretty daring and interesting with where it went with some of the afterlife scenes and exploration of childhood trauma. I’m really starting to like the Disney+ Marvel shows better than the blockbuster movies that originally spawned them. I did think the show ended a bit abruptly though and perhaps could have had even greater potential if the ending wasn’t so rushed.

‘Atlanta’ season 3, part 1. 7/10. Some interesting episodes and ideas, but I fear the line between innovation and pretentiousness is starting to blur for Glover. There were a few creative missteps and I feel like this show is starting to get a bit up its own ass. Still, some good moments and episodes (especially the first couple), so it wasn’t a total loss. And even the pretentious stuff wasn’t dull, at least.

‘Ozark’ season 4, part 2. 6/10. This has always been dismissed as a poor man’s ‘Breaking Bad’, but never has that been truer than during this shambling mess of a final season with character motivations that made no sense, head scratching creative decisions and plot-driven nonsense. Even bad mob dramas still have their fun moments (usually when someone is getting tortured or executed) so that’s why it gets a 6, but this was definitely a grind to finish.

Euphoria is like soft porn with a great storyline. It’s really good.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is great to. Much better than Season 2 of Picard.
