What's up with the First Family?

Last year: The President’s son and girlfriend were photographed driving the “official-use” car on seperate occasions to go shopping, in violation of policies.

Last year: The President’s son-in-law was also photographed driving an “official-use” car.

This year: Mrs. Luo (the First Lady’s personal assistant), is photographed taking an official-use car to and from work, having the driver make deliveries for her multi-level marketing products, and having the driver sweep and water plants at her mother’s place.

Wednesday morning, both she and the Presidential Spokesperson deny that such a thing happened, saying that “one picture does not tell a whole story.” Later in the day, the Presidential Spokesperson admits that she was guilty as charged…

Ok, it’s one thing to admit when you’re caught on film and apologize. It’s another to deny it and then admit and then make excuses…

:noway: This sort of abuse doesnt happen does it?.. no never… why the hell should Taiwan be immune to a disease politicians and their families throughout the world suffer from. Is this really ‘news’? I think not.

But it’s news when James Soong gets caught with his hand in the cookie jar…

I agree with you, “…why the hell should Taiwan be immune to a disease politicians … throughout the world suffer from. Is this really ‘news’? I think not.”

Slight difference between the abuse of official cars and the wholesale systematic embezzlement of billions of dollars perhaps?

Exactly.

I don’t see the difference between stealing $1 vs. $1 million. Stealing, embezzling, corruption, fraud is what it is. The scope doesn’t change the nature of the act. Namely, it’s just wrong to do it.

First lady?
First family?
First pet?

First nonsense.

Understand your angle andI would argue that these ‘minor’ political issues are what turns public opinion… whereas the embezzling of billions seems to be a sure fire ticket to the top. :loco:

Everyone loves a winner eh? What do you expect in a country where most businessmen look at Bill Gates as some kind of demigod?

Oh, and I meant it was a difference in scale and seriousness. If the help are routinely using offical resources for personal errands, that’s wrong and has to stop. That it is a big issue is a sad indictment of the media’s poor editorial focus, but I’m glad that the press is now confident enough to report transgressions at the top. This kind of thing was never mentioned during the reigns of CKS or CCK, when it was institutional, endemic and widespread. It still would be if Lien/Soong had won, and the media would not be reporting it. Which would you rather have?

With a 19 intelligence and 16 wisdom, a bag of never-ending capital financing, a vorpal sword of monopolistic conquest +5, and Bigby’s talisman of 92% Market Share, Bill Gates does indeed have the power of a demi-god.

Well the LAW sees it different. No cop is gonna arrest you for “borrowing” a fountain pen. Same cop gonna give you ten to twenty for “borrowing” a car.

You’re not looking hard enough.

You’re just being obtuse.

The degree is not what makes it bad; the act of stealing is what makes it bad. Unless of course you want to argue for moral relativism (e.g. $1 is not so bad, but $1 million is really really bad so it’s ok to steal $1, but not ok to steal $1 million). If so, then we’ll agree to disagree.

Is ‘stealing’ a car to let your son (et al) use that is included in your ‘package’ of entitlements on par with stealing billions from public monies to fund your sons lavish sportscar and lake front home lifestyle?

Life is not a high school philosophy class. Driving a government car to the laundry is not the same as large scale theft. Saying so is not even obtuse, it’s just stupid.

Not to mention the moral relativism? of complaining about what one has done oneself as a matter of course for years and years once one is not in a position to do so anymore  Let me know when the DPP steals large sums of money from the Taiwan people, then you’ll have something to talk about. Until then, find your $1’s to pick on and whine about, I’m sure more will turn up. Just keep rationalizing those millions into some back corner of your dusty cranium.

The DDP is not doing much against corruption, though. How about Lafayette and those millions that where stolen from the KMT? Where’s that money and why does nobody seem to care about it? I’m sure there are some BIG names involved…
blah blah blah
Oh good, you’re back. That must mean you’ve finished your …

Funny you mention that, because every time someone does, the crybaby loser parties start screaming about ‘green terror’ again.

green terror, hehe. how frightening!

pan-Green apologist. They did something wrong and should punished, end of story. If the President overlooks his own family breaking the law, what assurances are we given that the whole government is not corruptible now even with the DPP?

In SK they took the president’s son to trail over issues of corruptions. We should do the same with the first family law breakers.
