This article makes me feel homesick. Having lived in Taiwan for the past 10 + years, only returning home every year or so, I really miss pubs. My perfect pub … that would have to be Doheny & Nesbitts on Baggot street, Dublin, rubbbing shoulders with Colin Farrell and the other actors from Ballykissangel. The Guinness was so creamy you could eat it.
Rubbing shoulders with… Colin Farrell did you say?
…I guess I should plan my next trip, eh?
My first few weeks here I searched in vain for a good pub. The closest I found was one on the second floor of a building on Roosevelt near the morning market. I’m not sure of the location. Either way, it failed.
My perfect pub… Well. In NYC there is a bar called Revival. Every Thursday my friends and other would pack it full. There are two floors with a patio. The main floor with the bar is in the basement. Proper Irish style bar with Guiness on tap and $3usd gin and tonics. My bartender knows my orders based on what time of day it is. Other than Thursday nights, its usually empty and one can sit to enjoy the piece and quiet. Ironically its right near Union Sq so its pretty hidden. Dark too. Which is a must. I celebrated my 18th birthday there (completely illegally of course lol). This is the first year I’m not celebrating my birthday but it was the last place I stopped to before boarding the plane to Taipei.
Another one of my favorites is also underground. Its also two floors, but the ground-floor is a dance club and the bottom is usually closed off and most don’t know it exists. I think most people think its the employees’ lounge or something. The ceiling is really low and there are comfy chairs lining the wall and also a proper Irish-style bar. The bartender is awesome, goes by the name Guzzo, and he can make these ridiculously tasty and entertaining drinks if you’re in the mood.
Both places are great to be by yourself or go with a group of friends for parties cause of the intimate setting.
Pubs must be dark.
Pubs must be quiet.
Pubs must have a bartender who will get to know you.
Pubs must stay open if I am still there even if its 4 in the morning.
Edit: I have pictures of Revival.
Bubba, the bouncer giving me a thumbs up for my 19th birthday. (Illegal in the US, you know)
Jason, my bartender of 4 years. He left, though
Lili, that was when I was living in Dublin around 15 years or so. He probably has a few Irish locals in LA.
Have you checked out Underground on Shi Da Rd? It might be the nearest thing to the bar you described. Other than that, there’s Bobs or Speakeasy.
