Hainanese call mainland China “Da Lu”. I have a Hainanese friend who told me so

That’s cause the Chinese word for mainland China is “Da Lu”

Are there ancillary reasons for why “this” is “this”? 
going to the mainland (dalu). PRC no ambiguity.
Going to the main island might be ambiguous.
He was also living in Hong Kong and understood clearly when locals called him a “Dalu ren”

I guess “this” and “this” can actually be different depending on where you are looking from. I mean my “this” could be your “that”. So in this case - or in that case if you like - his “that” was a different “that” to their “that”. Their “Da lu” was China, but not here. and his “Da lu” was also China but not here. Just that his here was their there.
Or as Dr Seuss put it:

Six sick chicks tock”
I wasnt disagreeing. When he is on Hainan he calls people from the maninland, mainlanders. At the same time, when he is in Hong Kong he accepts it when he is called a mainlander by locals.

I’m still trying to digest the idea that it took Rocket several years decades to figure out that you can say chicks yuan in free china Taiwan
This one is definitely impossible if people cant even say ‘chicks with dicks’:
