I really love Forumosa! It helped me with almost all aspects of my life. But, not going to live in China! The survey asked where we were and I really am not sure. There is no Taiwan or Taiwan R.O.C. in the choices. I chose Gambia.
It’s closer to Taiwan than China is.

Amen! But they closed the provincial capital a number of years ago, didn’t they? Didn’t they also have some kind of senate or something that represented the other “occupied” provinces as well? When I saw that I stopped filling in the survey.

I don’t know why people are getting their panties in a knot over this. Most people here surely are realists in the sense that they know most of the world recognizes the PRC. At least when people fill out Internet-based forms, they are usually given the choice of Taiwan or China, and the PRC label is not often included (perhaps because it is too long and Internet language on forms strives to be succinct in most cases).
Most blue-supporting Taiwanese would have no problem with China as it does not reference the PRC or ROC–just China. Taiwan, when offered on some applications that aren’t official (bank applications, job applications on Internet etc.), is definitely the preferred nomenclature but I can understand why some Internet surveys/applications etc. don’t include it.
To me, not filling a survey in because it says “Province of China” seems to be pro-green fanaticism. I’m as pro-Taiwan, pro-Japan-, pro-US as they come, but I realize that most people,including software programmers, may not be fully versed in the nuances of Taiwan-China relations and terminologies as foreigners here are.
No excuse they can google and learn ffs. It’s not like they live in the dark ages is it?
I refuse to buy anything that lits Taiwan as a province of China nor fill out any surveys.

A lot of the companies simply download a country list from ISO and are none the wiser that the term “Taiwan, Province of China” is in there. Quite a few companies have been responsive if informed that the term is offensive to many Taiwanese, and they’ll correct it in their software.
True, Chris. But it isn’t an accident that ISO has Taiwan as a province of China. It’s there because of Chinese pressure which is why it’s justifiable to object to the designation.
I’ve had a lukewarm response to that. Most of them ignore it, one or two write back and say they don’t give a rat’s todger, and one or two have actually changed it. I recall a Canadian gov’t agency did respond positively. Nice.
I usually ask if they can change it to the politically-neutral “Taiwan”, without any appendages. I’m guessing the ones that respond negatively have experienced a shitstorm from mouthbreathing mainlanders who insist that Taiwan must be clearly marked as a Province of China.
Try putting ‘Taiwan, Province of China’ down as your delivery address… Yep your package is going to China.
I wasn’t aware anyone other tan scared governments thought Taiwan was a province of China. Its about as independent to china as Canada is to the USA ( though can/us relations are minus the missiles).

probably more prosperous i would think. Wasnt camphor a big thing back then? Mayeb we would have less old forests, though i think at some point the Japanese would realize there is good sense to maintain such a good shipping location and have a semi-tropical island to call your own.
There is a reason after all that China wants Tawian and puts so much effort into bullying the rest of the world to see it that way. More than just ego.
Yeah Taipei might look like a little Tokyo? But on the whole it may be less properous? Because it likely wont be the tech giant that it is? No Taipei 101 I would think? No Palace Museum. No Grand Hotel.

That’s being a little picky and bitchy, IMHO, and you guys are starting to act like the Taiwanese do and think that the rest of the world actually cares about cross-strait relations. Most people think Taiwan is Thailand, and don’t care at all whether the Taiwanese wants independence. Are we supposed to petition ISO to change the database for every little place in the world that thinks they deserve independence? Ok, let’s add Kurdistan to the list, remove “occupied” from “Palestinian Territory”, and what the hell, add “Quebec” to that list too while you’re at it.
We can’t possibly expect software programmers to know every single political disagreement with every single country in the world. Taiwan is on the ISO list as ‘Province of China’ because that is what it is. Don’t like that? Go protest every country (except the 20 or so shitty ones Taiwan gave computers to) and tell them to change their (lack-of) recognition of Taiwan. I had a uni transcript mailed to me here recently, and guess what their computer put on the envelope? Taiwan, Province of China. Did it get here? Yes.
This is the reality of the situation. I do think that the best resolution to this “problem” is removing the Province of China part, just leaving Taiwan, and they should change China to “Mainland China”. Aren’t Hong Kong and Macau part of China too? Listing them separately kind of goes against the One-China principle in some way too, doesn’t it?
Actually TW-nese want to continue to roar at least if they gonna be a mouse, and uh , key you in on a little secret. The TW-nese mostly are not interested in the ONE CHINA POLICY, rather its the ONE CHINA, ONE TAIWAN policy.
Most Taiwanese do NOT consider themselves part of Mainland China nor want to be part of the same state that is run by the PRC today.
IMHO, it doesn’t matter if foreign countries recognize Taiwan or not, and it doesn’t matter if software developers do not understand the intricacies of cross straits relationships. What matters is that I saw it on a survey from Forumosa.com, (a website about Taiwan and made for the expat community in Taiwan). They should know better. What were they thinking when they allowed that to pass on the survey. Did they even check the survey before allowing it to be uploaded. Someone obviously had their pants down when they let this slip through.
Perhaps I missed it, but I have not seen any response or apology from them. I guess that they feel it is okay to insult so many of their readers.
