I go to Carrefour to hope to maybe buy some steak meat that I can cook myself but to my dismay, even the lowest grade are a minimum of 300 for a 6oz cut.
How the heck are steak shops at Shilin night market offering 6oz steaks for 150 and it includes other stuff?
uhhh…hmmmm… meat markets, perhaps?
you know…the ones that have all kinds of raw meat for obasans to haggle over to make dinner for their family. you can’t be in Taiwan this long and not ever walked by one, right?
I think finding a market that sells beef is hard. At least all of the ones near me just sell pork, chicken, and fish. I’m sure one of the bigger ones in Taipei would have beef though.
You can also just google to see if there is a butcher near you. I did that last year and it turns out there was a small butcher store down the road from me that has pork and beef. I don’t know the price of steak, but if I remember correctly, hamburger was a little cheaper than Carrefour.
Costco is the obvious choice. If you have room in your freezer, buy a good cut and freeze it in small portions. That will make it cheap.
You can also find a neighborhood butcher, it’s all frozen, but it’s cheap
Beef dealers are rare in the market, most are pork, chicken, or fish. I ended up buying boston butt pork and that made some great pork chop. It was about 170 per jin (that is the usual price for pork at the market, regardless of cut).
