A colleague has developed a hankering for Western style fruitcakes–the kind that are firm and indestructable, not the Asian-style kind that has fruit mixed in a cake, but there the resemblance ends. Anybody know a good place that has 'em?
God, where to start?
Wolf_Reinhold, Stragbasher, Fred Smith, ac_dropout, Maoman, Big Fluffy Matthew, Tetsuo, Maposquid, AlmasJohn, Daasgirl, Iris, Hsiadogah, Durins Bane… the list goes on and on.

That was too easy.
I’ve seen some at Costco before, but I cannot tell how good they are. I don’t like to eat fruitcake. But I like fruitcakes.
If she’s cute, I’m single.
OK, a serious reply. I’m not sure where to get a good fruitcake in Taiwan. Each year I bring back one from the US shortly before christmas. I always get one from the Collin Street Bakery in Corsicana, Texas. I’ve been eating their fruitcakes since I was just a kid and think they are unconditionally the best fruitcake out there. It’s not cheap, but I think it is well worth it. You can order from their website at collinstreetbakery.com/ and they will ship to Taiwan. Delivery charge for a medium deluxe fruitcake to Taiwan is USD8.45 for standard shipping.
There are plenty of bricks laying around the ubiquitous construction sites here that would make good substitutes.
Maybe you could try Wecare somewhat closer to Christmas (not yet, they didn’t have Christmass stuff in mine when I went there last Sat). They definitely used to have Panettone (Italian Christmas cake) the last two Christmasses.
Or one of the German bakeries. Schwarzwald Cafe used to have European style fruitcake before. Check the thread on German bread for details.

OK, I just read an article on these things and pleasant memories came to my mind. We had a neighbor who baked a really nice one, all nutty and sugary, that she battered in heavy duty liquor to a very yummy consistency…
Seriously, where can I find a nice fruitcake? I am not talking about those awful things you get packed in Jason’s, I want a freshly baked one, that I can accompany with a nice glass of milk.
