Where to buy Taiwan politics & culture books in Taipei?

Do you know where in Taipei I can find books on Taiwan politics and culture? I remember there was a shop near Taida that had a sweet potato as its logo, but last time I was in Taipei I couldn’t find it. Does anyone know where that shop is or what it’s called, or any other similar specialist book shop in Taipei?

I recommend making the publisher SMC (Nantian) your first stop. It’s by Tai-Da, in a lane parallel to Xinsheng South Road:
No. 14, Alley 14, Lane 283, Roosevelt Road, Section 3
tel. 2362-0190

Another reason for going to SMC first is that you’ll get a discount there on SMC books but not at the other store, IIRC.

When leaving SMC, turn north (left) and walk for a block or two. The Daiwan store (the one with the sweet potato logo) will be in a lane on the right (toward Tai-Da) on the north side of the street. Sorry, I don’t have the exact address. But if you can’t find it you might go back to SMC and ask the laoban, Mr. Wei.

I haven’t actually been to this place…but I have been given three gifts purchased there… a Taiwan T-shirt…one I actually wear…a book “Formosa Betrayed” by George H. Ker…(good book…covers TW history from around 1943 to 1965…bit depressing…the yanks really deceived the Formosans with their promises of freedom and democracy…mmm sounds like Iraq…)…and a DVD with English and Japanese subtitles, “Oral History Documentries of Taiwan White Terror”.

You can also order online…if you can read Chinese. The website says there will be an English language site soon…

It’s near Eslite bookstore around Taiwan Universtiy main gate.

Yes, that’s the second store I mentioned. I highly recommend it.

Thanks for the additional info.

I don’t think you’ll find any books on Taiwan culture

Deep grave dig here to call attention to the upcoming closure of what is arguably the most distinctive Taiwan-focused bookstore in Taipei: the wonderful 「台灣ê店」in an alley off Xinsheng South Road near NTU. Rent is going up, and after 29 years in that location, the bookstore is being closed. The incredible boss—79 years old (!)—will apparently be looking for a new location.

Some good news:「台灣ê店」has apparently found a new home, near Shandao Temple MRT Station:
