Where to get hitched

OK, I’m planning on tyeing the knot In October this year and am looking for somewhere to have the dinner.

So there are loads of place in Taipei and we’ve been to few without much luck, but here’s what we would like:

  1. Somewhere with character - not a faceless concrete cube of a hotel.
  2. Close to the city ie within 40 minutes either side, in the mountains would be great
  3. A reasonably flexible menu for about 1000NT a head, any type of food
  4. Somewhere with enough space for a band and a dance
  5. A garden
  6. Small and intimate not a wedding organization company

This maybe hoping for too much and compromises may have to be made but having character is the important bit.

If all else fails McDonald’s maybe having a wedding party

Any advice is much appreciated

Thanks

I know a lovely new restaurant in Jinshan just out of town on the beach. Lovely decor inside, large deck outside literally beside the beach that 50-100 people could linger on comfortably (they have lights at night shining on the waves), and a large open area upstairs for conferences and I think weddings. I’ll find you the number later as my cat is sitting on my lap.

Thanks Mucha but we’ve already been out that way and it’s been ruled at as being to far out of town and it’s difficult for people to get to.

Maybe I should have mentioned that being on / close to the MRT would be a bonus.

Is there anything down in the mountains near Muza?

Lots of nice places in the mountains. See my thread on The Marvelous Teahouses of Maokong.

The place with the glass bottom could be good as it’s right by the new gondola station. Amazing views of Taipei on a clear night.

The green house is also an option, good food, a little more rustic but you could decorate it, and they already serve alcohol.

I’d be happy tp show you around one afternoon.

Good idea I’ll check it out. Thanks

Stuart Ca,

Here are a couple of ideas, if you need more info PM me.

My friends are getting married at Taipei Story House this month. That is the house next to the Taipei Fine Arts Museum. They are having a garden wedding with a buffet. Might be a place to look into.

There is also a place called La Provence, a French restaurant with quite nice, large gardens and a big basement for functions, on the way to Shr-Ding (south of Muzha). A gentleman from one of the European trade offices had his wedding there a while ago (now how vague is that…) oops just read about Muzha… actually this place is next to the highway, there are buses but no MRT. Tel 26646700. http://www.laprovence.com.tw

My husband’s coworker owns a restaurant in Danshui, called Moldau. Downstairs is a Chinese restaurant, the second floor is a big function room that was going to be a coffeeshop, it has a big outdoor balcony with views of the ocean and the other side of the river (Bali). the space is not really decorated so you could do that yourself. I recently asked about weddings for someone else, they said they can do that. It is a 10-min ride from Danshui MRT but I think they have a shuttle bus, or you can offer taxis. Tel 28056657.

(We organised our own wedding, no wedding company, we had our wedding in a banquet restaurant but just refused their help and didn’t hire any planner.)

I pass by that one a lot and always assumed it was some tacky Taiwan attempt at European food and design. I am not saying it is as I have only ever seen the place drivign by at 70 or up from the ridge. Interesting, I will have to check it out myself.

Story House sounds nice.

Mucha Man,
We have been there a few times. The food is actually quite good, a little more “pricy” at around 700-800 for lunch. They have a real grass lawn and little vineyard, and tables out under the trees. There were always Westerners driving dept of foreign affairs cars there when we went.

There is another nice place I know of but it is on the way to Pinling, too far for a Taipei wedding unless you booked overnight.

Great ideas asiababy, we’ll certainly check them out over the coming weeks.

Thanks

Okay, I saw the PERFECT place for you today. Out near Toucheng, so about 50 minutes from Taipei. But, big garden right on the ocean facing Turtle Island. Open grassy area, surrounded by trees and shrubs and flowers, then a deck and a rocky shoreline. Building has style. In fact two floors contain the owner’s private collection of stone lions, many of which are antiques. Great food. All fresh seafood from nearby Wushih harbor. Chef is a young guy in his twenties. Boss is sendign him to Beijing for a cooking competition this month.

And they do weddings.

I took a coupel pics of the garden if you want to see. I know it’s a bit farther out than you want but man, I would get married here.

That looked really cool. Is it possible to stay overnight in that place?

Mucha Man,
Do you have the address for the place?

Yes, you can stay overnight. Not cheap (NT7,200 weekdays/8100 weekends for a sea view, cheaper for an inward view) though when you add in free dinner (fresh seafood) and breakfast and afternoon coffee, and soon hot springs (they’ve already reached the springs by drilling, but are going a little further to get slightly hotter water), it’s good.

You can also just stop by for a meal or coffee.

phone: 02 987 0782
fax 978 0776
address: 36 Binhai Rd, Sec 4, Toucheng

It’s right beside the Beiguan Tidal Park, or just a few km south of Daxi Beach, or 10 minutes north up the number 2 after you exit the tunnel to Ilan (take the Toucheng exit.

Thanks for all the info everyone.

After a few weeks of searching we found the Cheer Life Spa and resort, which looks amazing and is nowhere near as tacky as the English name suggests. It’s a big area with man made and natural waterfalls, deep in the heart of the mountains but close to the city.

For those of you that want to check it out here’s the address:
No. 55, Zhi-Shan Rd, Sec 3, Taipei

Keep driving past the Palace Museum and into section 3 there is a red sign point left.

We had our wedding party at Westlake Village in SanYi about an hour and a half south of Taipei. It is beautiful and mountanous there and they can accomodate many parties at the same time, you can have it outside or inside and the food is excellent.

I am in exactly this position, with pretty much the exact same requirements!

1 Outdoor area, but indoor in case of bad weather.
2 About 80-100 people
3 Prefer easier to get to
4 Not too expensive
5 Hopefully without anyone else getting married there at the same time

Does anyone have any updates to previous suggestions? Mucha man- any new discoveries? How did it go at Cheer Life, StuartCa?

Thanks!
