Regarding the “Taiwan is trailing other Tiger economies. I support unification because I want Chinese money” argument:
Ratio of Hong Kong’s GDP per capita to Taiwan’s:

  • Nominal (1997): 1.948
  • Nominal (2019): 1.943
  • PPP (1997): 1.420
  • PPP (2019): 1.211

1997 is the year that Hong Kong was handed back to China.

Any benefits besides housing becoming unaffordable?
