Which ADSL service providers do you consider to be the most reliable/fastest ones on the market?

Why would you use ADSL unless you live outside a major city?
And if you are, the only thing really worth looking at is cost, as at least in my experience, there isn’t that much difference between the various service providers here.
The only thing that might differ and it’s something you can’t test until you’ve had your service installed, is how they route their data abroad. Oh and possibly how many users they have per exchange, but since everything goes through CHT’s network at one point or another if you’re using ADSL, it shouldn’t really make much difference again.

i am living in a rather remote village not high up in the mountains like alishan but somewhat similar

you mentioned that all service providers use CHT’s network

if that’s the case shouldn’t I use CHT then as they own the network physically and are thus least susceptible to speed dropoffs and even internet cut-offs?

Not really, as CHT only owns the bit between you and the exchange, from there on the other providers would have their own equipment installed, so any failures that aren’t between you and the exchange would be dependant on the service provider. CHT’s service is called HiNet, then there’s Fareastone/Seednet and Taiwan Mobile, not sure if there are any other companies that provides ADSL service.
If you have cable TV, you might want to check with your local cable company if they provide internet as well, since it’s possible you can get a faster and more affordable option through them, since ADSL is quite limited in terms of speeds and Taiwan doesn’t appear to have any service provider that offers ADSL2/2+.

I would use the service that owns the network … eliminates the blaming game when something goes wrong technically, speeds up the service … and CHT has the MOD service which I like over cable.

Looks like Seednet offers 12/1Mbit/s ADSL seed.net.tw/home/access/renew/bundle_vip.php

Hinet is limited to 8/640k broadband.hinet.net/adsl/32.html and I don’t think they offer MOD on their ADSL service, only on their Fibre service, but I could be wrong.

brilliant…

i was thinking of getting cable internet as well but there were some posts in here which claim that cable internet is… unreliable… like if there is a river and too many boats in them, the speed of the river would slow down or something…

this is what’s turning me off cable and forcing me to look at adsl

I had cable internet where I used to live, no problem at all.
It really depends on what kind of set up the cable company has. If they’re running a modern cable network (DOCSIS 3.0) or Fibre to the building it tends to be fine, but yes, older cable networks can be slow if there are a lot of users, as the bandwidth used to be shared.
