For countries to win a war and then lose the peace is hardly the exception. Just look at the KMT for another example of this. They can be said to have played a role in defeating the Japanese, but what did they get out of this victory? Well, Taiwan obviously, 
but it’s poor compensation for losing (the rest of) China.<-- Don’t jump all over me for that, please. 
Even though Taiwan is probably my favourite place in Asia.
