You’re perfectly echoing my own experiences when I was a young guy living in Taiwan. It doesn’t happen to me anymore (probably because I’m no longer young), but I used to get a lot of attention from gay men all over Taiwan, though I actually liked it because they were the only people giving me sexual attention and it felt good. I even had one guy follow me into the toilet as though he had to make sure I wasn’t really gay. Nothing like that has ever happened to me in the UK. Here, I’d only get attention from gay men in nightclubs, but they would leave me alone once they knew I was straight.
That said, I miss the attention. The last time I went to Taiwan, I went to Ximen on my own for a drink on a busy night and not a single guy tried to talk to me which made me sad. 
I feel that this is the basic experience of being female and having guys hit on you when you are not interested. (I hope this doesn’t sound mean, I love Tommy’s stories)

That area is also my favorite place to go have drinks. It’s outdoors, the drinks are stout/decently mixed with a proper amount of ice, and there is always folks looking to chat.
When I met my wife I took her there for drinks, she was quite shocked. Took some of the medicinal fungus and had a wonderful night in Ximen. Many kids and businesses later, it still remains one of our favorite nights!
I still love it around there too. Even though nobody strikes up conversation with me anymore, I still love sitting alone in the Red House outdoor area on a pleasant Friday evening observing the crowds or going to one of the interesting cocktail bars with a friend.
