Why is the Democratic Progressive Party's logo green?

We all know that the major political forces in Taiwan are the Pan-Blue coalition centered around the Kuomintang and the Pan-Green coalition centered around the Democratic Progressive Party. The Kuomintang’s blue logo was established in the late Qing dynasty. Why, when the Democratic Progressive Party was founded in 1986, did it choose green as its logo color rather than red, white, orange, or some other color?

Auspicious color? (Jade)

Harmonious aura? (Nature)

Filial piety? (Someone with Irish ancestors)

Mystic undertones? (Suggested by fortune teller)

Power play? (Personal favorite color)

The possibilities are endless…

(EDIT: I didn’t realize I was in a politics thread. Ducking out quickly now)

Signifies their commitment to environmental protection. Note EVA and Evergreen are also green because they are connected with the DPP.

Evergreen Marine was founded in 1968.

Since its early fleet growth in the mid-1970s, the company has intentionally painted its ship hulls a vibrant green paired with bold white block lettering. This was an explicit branding choice by founder Chang Yung-fa to ensure the vessels were easily recognizable and stood out uniquely at sea and in harbors.

Ah yes the heyday of the 1980s and 1990s. That coalition started to break apart during the disappointments of the Chen Shui-bian years. Fast forward to the 2020s, and the William Lai government’s gung-ho pro-growth agenda does not exactly scream out boundless environmental love. The remains of this coalition will fracture even further if Lai goes ahead with the scheme to restart nuclear power.

Blue was taken, red is for the communists, white is used alot in funerals - green is the one left from the ‘major’ colours.

And: in Taiwan black signifies criminality (example: “black gold”). Probably not the best marketing for a freshly established party with members already derided as criminals by the KMT’s one party state.
