Why Rottweilers are cooler than Pit Bulls

Yeah i like ferrets too.
I had ferrets when I was a teenager. Good fun poaching rabbits in the 80’s.(yes we ate all the rabbits).
Having ferrets and jack russels you have got to expect to get bit at least once with that combination.
P.S.
The Jack Russel is an English dog. But the Scots have produced some awesome breeds of terrier, as you no doubt know sandman. I got some very old books in an attic in England on terriers. Cairn terriers were a very game breed of Scottish terrier and would give Jack Russels a run for their money. Great little dogs. One of my books was one on the Cairn terrier. Lots of info about breeding them to be game etc. Not the kind of book you find anymore. As now most breeds of dogs are bred to look “the right way” not for the original purpose. Hence all the physical defects. Poor English bulldog for example. They look nothing even like the original and have all kinds of health problems. I blame show breeders for that.

I think one of the biggest issues facing dogs isn’t so much the breed itself, but the people who are buying them and then not using them for their purpose. Dogs get bored and do bad things. Most dogs don’t do so well when ignored or not allowed to run off enough steam. Anyway I have to say that I prefer Pyranees Mountain Dogs. Big fluffy white things that are so gentle, but can rip off your face if you happen to attack their owners. They also seem to discriminate between what is and isn’t a threat; Hense my 180pound pyr didn’t eat my neighbors neurotic little shit of a dog that came running out to bite his ankles.

totally agree. Great quote. Sums the problem up in one nice sentence. :bravo:

Don’t want to bring everyone down but saw this sad story today

news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/engl … 222319.stm

I wonder if there’s going to be another dangerous dogs backlash in the UK?

Yes very sad story. Nasty. And of course there will be another backlash. PETA want to ban all these dogs anyway. I guess they will get their chance now. The quote above is even more relevant now. My heart goes out to the family of that little girl who will no doubt feel guilty for the rest of their lives.

Tigerman’s quote about ‘gameness’ is really giving me chills now

I have huge sympathy for the girl, the family, and, if I may say it, the dog too. But euthanizing the dog was the right thing to do.

(I often contemplate the idea of a home for dogs who may be a danger to people or other animals, and I know that some do exist, but I can’t imagine how it would operate safely).

I can’t imagine how it would even be possible to fill it. “May be a danger?” The problem is they’re pretty much under the radar until a tragedy occurs, by which time they’re already proved a danger.
Unless you’re talking about patrolling the streets or getting neighbours to inform on other neighbours who spot someone walking one of these breeds or keeping them in their yard, and then getting some kind of swat team to come in and take the dog by force, which begins to sound a bit like the Chinese government’s method, only without the beating to death part.
The whole thing just sucks. These dogs can be fantastic if they’re properly kept and controlled, and the idea that breeds will be dying out just because of peoples’ stupidity, greed or lack or foresight makes me sick.

I mean if one has already proven to be a danger.

When doing CNR, we have to agree to remove aggressive dogs. We then have to find a lifetime home for that dog or kill him or her. I simply wish for a place where these dogs can be safely away from others without losing their life.

at risk of speaking out of class…there are lots of dogs that by temperment, training or abuse are cearly not fit to be in residential areas or living with a family. You don’t always find out at the beginning. My family in the states took on two giant Schnauzers (male & female) from a rescue organization. The male is the kind of hair trigger, aggressive dog that you literally don’t want to walk into the room or pen with him with a doubt or a limp. We’ve given him lots of training (professional) - but he’ll still turn and test your authority in split second. He will seek out all ‘ursurpers’ like children and try to get rid of them. You couldn’t let people near him. Luckily for me I’m a mean, firm bastard and can keep him under control. But, he was always inches from causing trouble and definetly not suitable for a suburban environment.

Luckily we had a farm in Fance where he can run around in a huge yard and a grizzled gardien that can control him. But if we didn’t have this outlet, there would have been no way we could have kept him. One day he was going to go after someone who did the wrong thing at the wrong time. I couldn’t bear the thought of some agency putting him down.

The female is perfectly fine with children. Completely different temperment.

How do you kill them?

How do you kill them?[/quote]

We don’t yet. The vet would have to euthanize them, or we would hand them over to the shelter. The best alternative is to find them jobs as guard dogs, but I’m not sure that would be practical, and the dogs may be kept on chains the rest of their life. Or we could release them in an area with no people, but I doubt they would stay away, as they would be drawn to the garbage that goes hand-in-hand with modern man.

Difficult one to weigh up; thankfully haven’t had to make such decisions yet.

I rescued a blue tick coonhound 10 years ago in Canada. I attended obedience school and trained him quite well but he seemed to have a dark side. He would get into things like the garbage and when I would catch him and try to reprimand him he would have none of it. It got to the point where I had to let him finish tearing apart the garbage and wait in another room. He bit one of my friends and terrified evryone that came to our place. One day he snapped and bit me, totally unprovoked. I still loved him but had no choice but to return him to the humane society. I had tried professional aggression training and had exhausted all the avenues. I had roommates at the time and was so stressed that he was going to hurt the kids in the area that I felt I had no other choice. Still saddens me to think about it. I wanted to save him but the damage had already been done, probably by the abusive scumbags that dumped him. I always hoped that maybe he ended up at a farm, that may just be wishful thinking. A beautiful dog and physical specimen.

Do you have a picture of this beautiful dog. I am interested to see.

I’m sorry I don’t have one here.

There you go. The owner of the pit bull that was shot is an ex-con drug-dealing skinhead chav. He’s the one who should have been shot. Fucker.

He will get a serious beating or killed within the year. Unless he’s a pikey of course.

Of course. What sort of person keeps a pit-bull in England? They come back after a piss-up and the little girl wants to stay with granny. Obviously. Then the dog eats the baby and hacks off grandma’s arm when she tries to intervene. Then the police turn up and shoot the dog.

Never understood the aversion to dog licensing in England. Works fine in N. Ireland but the English won’t even consider it as it would impinge upon their right to use dogs to frighten people and eat babies.

Mind you, you have to have a licence to watch TV or go fishing. Oh yes. That shit is totally regulated. No unlicensed TV watchers or fisherpeople - no way.

Oh please no more licenses.

TV license is so damn expensive and I can’t even choose not to pay for the license if I never watch the BBC. But i can watch the BBC here in Taiwan for free.

No dog licenses please.

DDA (dangerous dogs act) is draconian enough. In this case the law was not enforced. He had a pit bull that is a banned breed, it had been reported as threatening. They had every right to take it off him but they didn’t. They did not enforce the law properly. RSPCA too busy chasing fox hunters around the British countryside.

Well, to be honest; I’ve always been intimidated by Rotts.

Why? Well, I’ve been around 100lbs pitbulls and none of them gave the same same eye to eye or tug n’play type behavior Rotties do.

My buddy Mike and Anand had two huge Rotties. Brothers (dogs). And these two would give me bad vibes. The end result was that the two dogs ended up in Northern Ontario on a farm. MY mechanic had a Rottie and he (the dog) was an evil fuck. I’d play with him and then he’d charge me and take a bite out of my arm. He was only 110lbs.

All of the pitbulls in the area were docile with humans and had a fuckin field day playing with the rope or cog (rubber cone). I met one…ya one pitbull that I thought was an issue. And he was shit scared of my presence because his master used to beat on him. This dog would flinch and snap at me. I would be scared knowing that if this dog decided to bite me then i would have to do my best to snap it’s neck. I wasn’t friends with this dude…he was an idiot.

Other than the one mentioned above, the pitbulls/staffs I have met were beyond cool.

My sister has raised Cyran who is an 85lbs Pit who could jump a standard chain fence without a thought and she is the sweetest thing towards humans. Put her in another dog’s face and that’s another story. Max who was my dog only snapped towards a dog named Mamo. Who I explained in another thread as being an evil dog. Max also saved me in one fight in the park. Where a group of guys who had been drinking were taunting me and my dog. It ended up with Max (all 50lbs of him) and me 0-1. Max was always stiff or on guard around other dogs. And he only reacted to how people reacted to me. He could tell between play dighting (snapping and yelps) to the one and only time I got into it around him which turned into flesh tearing from skin. Awesome mutt. They can sense force (Used to punchem in the head with boxing gloves. Went through a few pairs knowing I would go a little too far. Some lasted longer than others due to MY OWN behavior). I might not be the leading expert on this but I can say that my dog read the situation completely.

Guys, these dogs (pits staffs) are awesome. they reflect the owners. They can be trained to do anything and not with much effort either. They live to please. They are a mirror image of you and are in my opinion, the best dogs in the world by far. They watch you and look to you for solid commands and consistancy.

Pits were trained to bring down other animals and have to be taught to hurt humans. Rotts/Sheps/Mastiffs were bred to hurt/kill humans. It’s that simple.

There is nothing that can stop a Pitbull who’s been trained to do what he loves. In spite of their looks, be tender and teach these animals and you’ll have a dog that will do anything for you.

I personally think that it’s how handsome (or how fuckin goofy they look) that rages the war against them as a breed.
