Just to say in the end I got 28mm pirelli P-Zeros, and now I’ve been running them for a couple of weeks, I slightly wish I’d got the 30mm. Next time I need new tires, I will. I feel safer on descents, better handling, and I feel faster.
I just went from 28mm to 32mm. Wider is definitely better. The ride now feels more cushioned and stable which gives me more confidence during descents, and there’s no noticeable tradeoff in acceleration or speed.
I’m yet to see any downsides to running 32c gp5000s on my good bike. I have wide rims and they measure up as 33mm too. I might try the gp urban over winter which comes in 35c, with a bit more puncture protection but still a fast casing.
They are 33% more expensive than the tyres on my car ![]()
The car is faster and has lower running costs, ultimately why i stopped commuting via bicycle.
Yeah gp5000 aren’t commuting tyres. Poor choice.
And I don’t think I’d trust £30 car tyres.
Do you get the folding ones as a pair?
The “proper” (I assume non-folding but I could be wrong) ones appear to be RRP £69.00 each.
I rode 25c Gatorskins on my road bike, Schwalbe Marathon’s on the commuter. The Marathon’s outlasted the wheels and the drivetrain, which is wild (they were poor quality parts though) - I loved the Gatorskins, made a nice noise.
Bought some Continental Urban Taraxagum 35c tyres to replace the Marathon’s, just for ponce tbh. Made from dandelions!
The tubed ones (all gp5000 are folding like all other race tyres) I use and mentioned up thread are typically £40 each. Lordgun has them at £37 and you can pay a bit more depending on size and where you get them.
The expensive ones you’re thinking about are the tubeless ready ones. You can get them offer sometimes for about £100 a pair, but I don’t run tubeless on the road.
You want contact urbans for commuting:
£30ish most places. Half the weight of marathon plus, roll good, nearly as long lasting and puncture proof enough for my commutes across London. Don’t think I’ve ever bought tyres at rrp TBH.
The taraxagum or whatever are indeed reportedly shit.
Ah yeah, but they’ve got that #flowerpower hippy shit going for them. Matches my Brooks saddle imperfectly ![]()
I’ve had them about four years, not fitted yet.
It’s really hard to go back to skinny tires once your used to the comfort of 32/35 or so… That’s a main reason for disc brakes…
In Europe I run gp5000 32mm up front tubeless and 35 conti GP all season TR on the back. It’s a nice combination as the TR on the back holds up about the same time as the 5000 on the front…
GP5000 tubeless on the back is quite costly…
I do like the conti ultra as a cheap tire.. the aren’t that slow, hold up well enough and are pretty cheap. Kinda 1/3 of the running cost Vs gp5000 tubeless…
But yeah before I had a disc brake road Bike I used conti or pirelli 28mm and had to even true my wheel slightly off center so they would fit. Was damn tight if there was some dirt/rain…
The problem with 35mm is finding aero rims for them. It’s much cheaper on 30/32…
That’s if you do many group rides kinda essential to make sure your tire size is perfect for for the rim cause if you ride 50km/h all ride or more it really makes a big difference as your body is better covered from riders up front.
