I’m wondering if a current American Television (produced second half of 2012) will work in Taiwan.
I think yes.
- Same voltage as the USA
- Analog signal in Taiwan uses NTSC (same as USA)
- But I am not sure about digital antenna or digital cable in Taiwan. (Not even sure if they exist there)
And reason that my arguments are incorrect?

Very good question. I know that the analogue signals are the same… But there are no more analog signals left in either Taiwan or North America.
The do use different sytems. Taiwan digital standard is DVB-T while the US uses ATSC standard.
Will it work… it depends on what kind of TV you want to watch. If you want to watch the free over the air (mostly Chinese) service, your TV may not work. You can check the set up menu on your TV and see if it lets you set your location. If Taiwan is on it, you are in luck. If not, you can still get a cheap enough set top box. I have a set top box and almost never use it.
If you want a decent amount of English Programming you will have to buy MOD (Media On demand), Digital Cable, or standard traditional cable TV.
If you don’t know MOD is the cable TV service provided by the Telephone company. You can get it almost anywhere in Taiwan and you can get a great deal if you bundle it with your phone and internet service.
If you choose digital cable tv or standard cable tv you must use the cable company that serves your area. In the cities like Taidong and Taipei the service is decent but where I live, importunately I paid the same amount for half the channels.
MOD and digital cable will come with a converter box and that box will give you the choice of Standard Video, HDMI and perhaps S video. Your TV will work fine.
I
Normal Cable TV will give you a standard analogue signal and your TV should work fine, but it won’t be in HD if that is what you want.
What is the make and model of your TV. I’m interested to know if it is multi-system too.
It is a Samsung 55" Class 1080p 240Hz Smart LED HDTV (no 3D)

Man, I sure should find a better way to spend my time… But I guess I miss my customer service days in the USA… I did what you could have done and got on the chat with the MAN. The SamSung Man.
First he gave me some outdated information that said it would work (the NTSC information) but it did not sound kosher. I had to teach him about the different digital systems.
Then asked me to hold. He made a few inquireries and told me that I was right…
He said… : All the Samsung US TV’s support NTSC format and the digital tuner mentioned above is a ATSC/QAM tuner.
Which means… you can use everything except the tuner… Buy a set top box if you want to watch the free over the air signals… But I assure… you will end up using either your local Cable TV company or the Telephone Service’s MOD. Both should work well with your TV.
If you are moving to the Kaohsiung/Pingtun area… that will be one Taiwan beer please. Double check my info… I make no warranties.
