Will Taiwan be more open to Foreigners

Hello, as we all know Taiwan is facing Aging and declining population.
Will Taiwan be more open to foreigners and more liberalised in visas.

Just as background…

No, I don’t expect it to get more open, especially during and immediately following the pandemic.

Taiwan will continue to ā€œimportā€ cheap labor from SE Asia and say that it’s open to skilled foreigners through the Gold Card program.

But the problem for Taiwan is that getting people to come and stay is not as easy as throwing open the doors. You either have to be a country that’s so amazing and/or intriguing (as judged by large numbers of people) that people want to come no matter what challenges life there brings, or you have to have a place that’s capable of successfully integrating the people who come.

Taiwan is a really great and underrated place, but I think it’s more of a niche, acquired taste. It’s not Japan or Thailand or [insert name of other countries that are super popular with expats].

Frankly, I’m not even sure how many of the Covid refugees who are coming via the Gold Card will stay here long term after the pandemic ends.

No, I don’t expect it to get more open

I think this is true for the highly-qualified segment. The basic problem is that there is not so much for those people to do in Taiwan in view of job opportunities and pay.

But the opposite segment on the more lowly qualified/labourer segment should grow by necessity over the medium term.

Yes I think so

Or it could embrace more of what Singapore offers, and what HK offered until recently.

Obviously, Taiwan can’t be either one of those places, but there are some reasonable structural changes it could make around immigration and foreign investment that could make it more of a player.

Yes, but long term, Taiwan shouldn’t forget that SE Asia is developing. If it doesn’t remain competitive…
