Windows 2000 on a 1TB hard drive - problems

Morning, ladies.

Have any of you, by any chance, ever loaded Windows 2000 onto a 1TB hard drive? I’m having problems. Currently I’m getting a blank screen with a flashing cursor, rather than booting into Windows.

Everything seemed to go well during installation, except that Windows only saw the drive as 130GB. I used Maxblaster to partition the hard drive, leaving 100GB for Windows in order to sort out that problem.

Any ideas? I actually went through this whole process twice. After the first time, I went into the repair console and did a FIXMBR, which left me having to install the whole thing again. So instead, the second time around, I installed on a different 1TB drive. Both are brand new.

Is it possible this computer is just too new for Windows 2000 to properly install itself? Or is 1TB too big? I thought Windows 2000 could handle up to 9TB or something.

Any advice gratefully received.

Yeah, Windows 2000 only does up to about 130GB.

I’m not quite sure how you make these tweeks when you can’t boot into windows. Maybe install into a 100GB partition then update to access the rest of the disk.

Thanks, Matthew.

I did do the 100GB partition for Windows. That still left me with a dodgy MBR or something, or somethign else that leaves me with a blinking cursor.

Any idea if sticking XP on it would get me any further?

Yes XP will work fine.

You will need an install disk that includes a service pack. Pre-SP1 XP didn’t even have SATA support, so it wont even install on SATA disks. I made an install CD from my original CD and slipstreaming it with SP3.

Ahh, so maybe SATA is the problem here. So if this Windows 2000 (an early version) doesn’t support SATA, I wonder how it managed to install itself on it (I checked what was on the hard drive afterwards and all the files were on there).

Anyway, I think I’ll go for XP. I have an unused legal disk sitting here anyway. Thanks Matthew and djlowballer.

I think it’s at least SP2 (Windows XP Home (not OEM)), but thanks for the advice about using Autostreamer if not.
