I really like some of the new features. Things are much easier to customize such as desktop gadgets (clock, calendar etc…) and color schemes.
I also am quite fond of the bar at the bottom where you can customize buttons for things you use regularly. And if you hover over a button where the progam is in use it shows what is running in a window at the bottom of the screen.
They got rid of the side bar from Vista which was terrible idea. Now you can put gadgets anywhere on your desktop you like. I have a clock, calculator, CPU speed clock and graph, calendar and a little gadget where you can quickly change your computers status (shutdown, standby etc…) easily.
But I have to say. Other than that, things are almost exactly the same as Vista (which I like and have had no problems with). So when this thing comes out are they going to expect me to shell out another NT5000 bucks or so for a couple of extra features?
I don’t think so.
Is anyone else running it?
(This thing is still in Beta form so a lot of things don’t work with it yet. Install it onto a haddrive partition and have a dual boot so you can use your other operating system for day to day things. I actaually have a triple boot going now. XP, Vista Ultimate and 7)
I’m also trying out Windows 7. Not really sure what I can do now that I couldn’t do before, but it does look nice. Maybe the differences are subtle and it easier to use and I don’t notice because it’s not giving me hassle? I wisely skipped Vista (and ME), it might be time for a new one this time.
Considered it, but then read the Beta release notes stating all the very simple things that currently don’t work or potential serious problems (like the media center ruining all MP3 files if you don’t install a patch first).
Not worth the headache just for memory-hogging “Aero”-type features I’ve already turned off in Vista, especially since you still have to pay for the upgrade later once the Beta expires.
I’m actually running it as my Main OS. It’s far better than XP and also much improved from Vista.
The MP3 thing doesn’t bother me, since I don’t use Media Center. I also don’t use Aero, etc.
Much improved:
Gadgets can go anywhere. I don’t really use them that much, but it’s nice.
I LOVE the new taskbar. Love it. LOVE IT.
Comes pre-installed with Codecs (quicktime, etc) which means it’s no longer necessary to install codec packs, etc. I just install MPCHC and I’m good to go.
Quite fast. I was using XP x86 and am now using Win7 x64. There are a few glitches, but overall it’s much faster and feels pretty smooth.
There are a few things that don’t work, but I’ve been sending in feedback so hopefully they’ll get fixed. I’m definitely buying a license once it’s officially released.
From July 1st the beta will shut down after 2 hours, and stop working completely on August 1st.
But… they have now released RC1 which will work until next March. I’ve downloaded mine, but not installed yet because it means backing up and reinstalling everything, no upgrading. And I am using it as my primary OS, something I didn’t do with Vista RC1. microsoft.com/windows/window … nload.aspx
The RC will work until June 10, 2010, so I highly recommend it. Download it from the Microsoft website. Or, here are direct links and checksums if you want to make sure you get the real deal:
No, it will work until March, after that it starts shutting down every 2h.
The RC can downloaded directly from Microsoft microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/
Just curious. Does 7 let you do stuff like label, tag and colour-code folders? Any other major useful changes like this, or is it all either general performance and extra gadgetty stuff?

My bad, you are correct. It starts shutting down every 2 hours starting in March and go completely POOF in June.
ok, so what are the issues with it? There were a lot of problems with Vista, so I stuck with XP. Quite happy with XP and it does everything I want just fine. What reason is there for me to upgrade to 7 apart from prettiness, which I don’t really have a use for? I mean, I don’t use all these desktop clocks and stuff - I’ve got a clock on the wall for that. Only thing I’ve seen in these posts I like is the codecs being preinstalled, but even then - it only takes 5 minutes to download a codec pack and install it from somewhere.
x08, from what I understand, performance and security. If you have a decent fast system, XP won’t be able to make the most of it, but 7 will. And apparently there’s better security, less bugs and stuff.
But what I’d like to know is if there are any other practical improvements. For example, one thing I’ve wanted for a long time (without having to install external software which slows things down) is the ability to tag, search easily and color-code folders (and even files).
It doesn’t have that feature. To be honest it doesn’t seem very different to Vista after they fixed all the bugs. The only glaring differences are the Task Bar (Excellent feature. Thank you Apple) and the ability to place gadjets anywhere on the sceen.
I skipped Vista. I think I might but 7 when it’s released. I’m happy with it so far. I’ve had only one crash in the 4-5 months running it. Only the occasional compatibilty issue. No major problems at all. Works like a charm.
