Wireless internet - not hotspots

my current employer want me to be able to get on the internet wireless from basically all over northern Taiwan.

the NB PC they have given me does not have centrino or any other devices. Moreover, going to a hotspot is not a solution, I have to be able to log onto the internet wirelessly no matter where I am.

How do I get about it?

Is there a wireless modem, I can put into the PC card slot?

What are my options.

Note I am not paying for this myself.

GPRS enabled phone and Bluetooth|Cable|IR connection to the Laptop.

I have a standart contract with Chunghwa (They might also have special GPRS contracts), T610 from SonyEricsson and Infrared on PAlm Vx. On the mobilephone I had to create a GPRS profile, on the Palm Vx I had to add a Modem using the IR port and a Network connection dialing a special string (99**2# to be exact) which would activate the GPRS profile on the phone. This way I can go online and check the mail anytime, anywhere.

Chunghwa (IMHO) is only charging per Kb not per Usage time so it is fine for checking mail and it is fast enough to browse the net.

I believe it is even easier on a PC with a Bluetooth adapter or a GPRS USB/PC-Card adapter. Other providers should have similar hardware/features.

Hmm. This sorta relates to a stock I’m invested in.

UT StarComm has a product called “little smart” (after the cartoon character), or xiao ling tong, or PAS (English acronym), which is basically a citywide cordless phone with 64Kbit modem built in.

I know they have some sort of presence in Taiwan, but I don’t know if their PAS system is available. (Most of the news about it seems to come out of the mainland.)

Get a Wiwi card and account. This is basically a PHS phone in the form of card that plugs into your notebook.

summing up:

The choice is between PHS and GPRS.

Who’s got the best coverage in the area between Jilong and Xinzhu?

I do not know about GPRS coverage in the north, but here in the Kaohsiung area PHS phones are useless piece of plastic with zero coverage. See also the I-mode vs. PHS vs. GPRS vs. other cell thread.

Thanks.

PHS only works in Taipei and xinzhu city.

GPRS has much better coverage.

I will be using it in greater Taipei, so that does not worry me too much.

Wi Wi card that fits the PCMIA (sp) slot. Need to activate a PHS cellphone account. I think cheaper than GPRS but only to a limited area of Taipei to north of ShinCHU.

Maybe 4800 NT for the card?

Pay per minute.

Office is on Jien Gwo road where the Big flower market is. It’s on the left hand side of the road. It’s cheaper there than elsewhere.

Now that’s a great one, and I shall have one. Thanks!

PHS is not cheaper than GPRS, but it might be a wiwi bit faster. With FarEasTone, I pay NT$400 for UNLIMITED GPRS downloads etc. Connection is fast too and it works Islandwide. Doesn’t PHS have a per minute charge and is not unlimited?

I’m looking for up to date information on this. Just got a notebook with built-in wireless. I want to be able to access the internet for a few minutes to occasionally 20 min. at a time (fairly limited usage, e.g. checking emails) for the next few weeks or more, and to be able to use it from an office desk in a similarly limited fashion. Neither location has free access, I’m told. Is the cheapest solution to pull the limited usage 3G SIMM card out of my cellphone and put it in some kind of adapter to connect to my computer? Please keep responses troglodyte-friendly, thanks!

Do you have ADSL at either location? You can always just plug the line into your notebook.

If the areas are within a Wi-Fly accessible region just go buy a one month card from 7-Eleven. NT500 I think.

No ADSL at either. (I have ADSL at home but won’t use it there.)

How would I know whether, say, 101 and Neihu’s “Sanzong” Triservices General Hospital are in a Wi-Fly accessible region?

(I’m trying to get this set up urgently before things close for CNY.)

Honestly don’t know though 101 should be for sure. Of course if you only need it for minutes a day just pop down to any local 7-Eleven most of which have Wi-fly.

Ok, I’ll check that out, thanks!

Try to find open and unsecured wifi connections  and steal some bandwidth …

Can you just tether to your phone?

I think you’ll need to actually explain to DB what that means and how he goes about doing it.
