Anybody using one of these which allow to set-up an overseas VPN connection to play Netflix?
On my iPad I am happy with reliablehosting which costs 21 USD per quarter, but I’d prefer to transfer the settings directly to the router not needing to activate VPN individually on the PC and several iDevices.
Heard Buffalo is pricy and rather difficult to set-up.
Oh, I also would need some extra dB gain
Thanks for any advice
What protocol are you using? I"m trying to get it to work on my laptop but the speeds aren’t great. 1-2Mbps. Which host city and port would you recommend?
Each VPN provider and router are different.
You will need to check the forums for your VPN service to find support to your specific router.
For online streaming, I’d recommend
http://strongvpn.com/

I’d lean towards HideMyAss because you have unlimited server switches, whereas StrongVPN has a limited number of switching per month.

Strongvpn IS reliable hosting.com and I am happy. I run my L2TP without attacks at 7Mbps down and 1 Mbps up on a San Francisco IP which I never had to change in a year. 7 UsD / month.
@papa, yeah, I know that each wifi router is different and I don’t intend to hack them, but I am simply looking into a ready-to-go model in which I can simply insert my VPn settings into the root UI. Will check ino the Buffalo one I saw at 3C.
I guess its hard to find a router that can do VPN as client.
Easiest way I can think of for a standard consumer is to find a router that supports DD-WRT,
then upgrade the firmware of that router to a DD-WRT release. See dd-wrt.com/site/index
You’ll probably end up using the CHT (or whatever modem) as bridge and use the PPP Client from the DD-WRT router to connect to the Internet.
For my Roku, Amazon, Hulu, Google Play, etc. I use unencrypted PPTP towards my own server in Fremont.
Encryption would slow things down or add unnecessary traffic overhead. MPPE encryption is probably OK.
Bringing this thread back to life. I’m a HideMyAss user. Just moved to Taipei. Anyone know where I can get a VPN capable router in Taipei? Just had DSL installed at my apartment here and it came with a D-Link Dir-2200 router. But I don’t think its flashable or VPN compatible. I wouldn’t know though. When I log into the router settings…its all Chinese…
This TP-LINK TL-WR841N is listed as DD-WRT compatible

You can get the DD-WRT firmware here (assuming you get a unit hardware version 8):
dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/down.php … wr841ndv8/
If they send a different HW revision, you can look here for the firmware:
dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/down.php … 13-r22118/
Look on the DD-WRT site for flashing instructions, or contact me and I will help look for it.
