Hi,

I currently live in Canada (19m) and am looking to go back to Taiwan for an internship (not going to dox but one of the largest tech companies) for roughly 2 months (full time) this summer.

I was born in Taiwan (citizen) and moved to Canada when I was 9 (also citizen). So what I have is my National ID number and an active Taiwan passport. But I do not have the physical national ID as apparently I can only get it when I’m 14 with a household registration but by that time my houshold registration ran out already? (Something like that according to mom) I currently do not have an active household registration (parents too, but grandparents does if that matters) and am not looking to restore it anytime soon.

Also, I am currently communicating with the company and they said I would either need to restore my household or apply for a complete visa and enter with my Canadian passport. BUT, I have a friend w Taiwan citizen but entered as US citizen and apparently you get into deep trouble with the military and you must enter with your Taiwan passport. I went back to Taiwan last year with 僑民 and Taiwan passport.

My question is do I need to apply for a visa for this job? Or am I a Taiwan citizen? Google says I might simply just need a open work permit?

Tldr; can I work with passport + national ID number without national ID and household registration

u are a taiwan national with the right to live and work in taiwan bec you have taiwan i.d. number

just need to update it.

but once you update it, you might need to do military service

Yeah, that’s the thing I don’t want to update and get a household registration.

So apparently there’s like a work permit that is just a pure work permit and not a visa?

Look into getting an overseas compatriot stamp in your passport. From my understanding, that should fit your situation (living abroad most of the year, but maintaining HHR in Taiwan).

Getting a visa for your Canadian passport might work - but it won’t solve the military issue.

You already have household registration, you are not nwohr.

Your household registration will automatically be ‘moved in’ when you enter Taiwan on your Taiwan passport. You just need to get the ID card printed which you may as well do

Entering on another passport doesn’t exempt you from military service, you should look into that.

As others said, you are already NWHR but with a previously active, but now inactive household registration.

This is different from a NWOHR (typically born in US, Canada, etc) with no household registration ever.
