Working in retail while studying in Taiwan

I have this weird goal I’d like to accomplish before I get too old to study Chinese at a more advanced level in Taiwan while working in a store (ideally a video game store or bookstore, but I’d consider anywhere). In Europe, it’s totally normal for language students to supplement their incomes and to get language/cultural immersion by working in retail on the side and I’ve even seen a few gaijin in Japan do the same thing.

Why is this not a thing in Taiwan? Is it not legal? It seems like such a great way to encourage foreign students and to fill jobs that, I’m guessing, most Taiwanese people don’t want to do themselves.
