I’ve found a lot of useful information on this forums sofar.
But one thing is not clear to me, despite alotta searchin’.
I am planning to study in Kaohsiung at NSYSU next semester.
I will leave the country before things kick off there to apply for a visitor visa (study) in Bangkok if it dried up there a little.
I understand that after four months of studying using that visa I can apply for a student ARC.
So far so good. But I remember reading somewhere a while ago that it would be possible for students in possesion of such ARC to work part-time to be able to continue studying mandarin in Taiwan.
Is this true?
I also asked the staff @ NSYSU and the friendly lady said that it won’t be legal to work on a student ARC.
(she laughed off my concerns of a raid and possible deportation when I mentioned working illegaly)
I normally would trust the staff, but I know the woman is working there for only a couple of weeks and she kept mentioning ‘student visa’ instead of saying ‘visitor visa’. So I’m kinda sceptical if she knows her stuff.
Anyway, I wanna make things absolutely sure because I’m planning to stay here for a while and don’t wanna screw things up.
Can anyone share their knowledge with me?
Perhaps link me to a government site that provides said regulations?
(I tried the immigration.gov.tw but couldn’t find what I am looking for; there’s something about Taiwanese websites that make them very user-unfriendly… well, for a dutchie like me I guess )

As I continue to search I found where I read the remark about the part-time work:
"10. Work While You Study
While learning Chinese in Taiwan, students may be able to work part-time. Students will gain experience and a sense of accomplishment communicating in Chinese, and they can earn some extra money."

VIII. Working in Taiwan：
Foreign students who have studied in school for two semesters or a language course for one year, with an excellent scholastic record, can work in Taiwan when one of the following circumstances applies:
A. Events of a serious nature have affected their financial ability to support themselves or continue their education, and the student can provide evidence of such circumstances.
B. An academic research institution at the student’s school requires a foreign student to provide assistance in its work.
C. The student needs to take part in an off-campus internship related to his or her field of study.
For foreign students with proficiency in a special language, the Ministry of Education may, on a case-by-case basis, give its approval for such students, following their enrollment, to take employment as instructors at language institutes affiliated with universities, colleges, or junior colleges, or at language institutes affiliated with foreign cultural and educational organizations in Taiwan.
Application for a work permit
Foreign students who want to work in Taiwan must hold a valid work permit.
With the exception of summer and winter vacations, students with work permit may work a maximum of 16 hours per week while the work permit is valid. The maximum duration of a work permit for foreign students, overseas Chinese students, and ethnic Chinese students is 6 months. A new work permit shall be applied after expiration. A work permit is good until the 30th of March of following semester if students apply in fall semester, or it is good until the 30th of September of the year if students apply in spring semester.
Students can apply for work permits to the Council of Labor Affairs, or each school’s office of students can apply collectively for work permits to Council of Labor Affairs by mail. Application forms can be downloaded from the BEVT website address at www.evta.gov.tw.
