World GYM Prices in Tainan, 2018

I hope this isn’t a duplicate thread. I was looking to compare World Gym Prices in Tainan but couldn’t find it. I visited the one right next to Ambassador Cinema (on Zhonghua Road).

I have read about all their sales tricks here so first thing I did was refuse the tour. I told them I have been to enough gyms. I just wanted to know the price.

Then the salesperson brought a brochure (with a company profile) and wanted to give a presentation which I also refused. Then came the price proposal :

Question 1 : 1 year, 2 year or 3 year contract ?
Ans : 1 year only

Offer #1 :

(one time) Signup Fee : $9888NT
(one time) Maintenance/Service Fee : $4888NT
(monthly fee) Monthly Fee : $2588NT

My response : Laughter
1 min later

Offer #2 :

(one time) Signup Fee : $1000NT
(one time) Maintenance/Service Fee : $2888NT
(monthly fee) Monthly Fee : $1388NT

Response : I want under 1000$ a month.

Offer #3 :

(one time) Signup Fee : $0NT
(one time) Maintenance/Service Fee : $2888NT
(monthly fee) Monthly Fee : $1188NT

Response : what if I my wife joins too ? Under 1000NT$ ?

Offer #4 :

2nd person price :

(one time) Signup Fee : $0NT
(one time) Maintenance/Service Fee : $1888NT
(monthly fee) Monthly Fee : $1088NT

Finally they said the offer is only valid that day which I didn’t buy. Then they gave me a discount coupon and said I will never get this price if I don’t get this in the next 5 days.

So main question is ? Is this already a decent price ? I still intend to haggle further. The only reason I am considering them is because I practically live across the street. I literally need 60 seconds to walk from the door of my house in to the gym. Any Advice on price ?

///// Further info :

I have read a lot about World Gym experience here in Taiwan. So when they tried to tell me what I great deal I’d be missing I told them I know all about their shitty service and that they should go and do a “world gym” search on Forumosa.com.

Other questions I asked :

  1. Payment method ? : Only Credit Card
  2. Auto Renewed ? : Always
  3. Transferable ? : Not Really, we will need proof/reason that you are leaving the area etc…
  4. Termination ? : If cancelled during first year , you pay 6000NT$ fine, but after 1 year you can cancel at any time.
  5. Termination Process ? : Oh, it only takes 5 mins, no funny shit. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:
  6. Can I use Other Wold Gyms in Taiwan or Worldwide? : No… this offer was only for this one gym.

That first offer is insane. I’d run as far away as possible from that alone. It reeks of shadiness even asking for almost 15K up front and almost 3000 a month after.

I can only imagine they’d end up like California did years ago. Their big thing was you could use any California Gym anywhere in the world with your membership! (except the other 2 California Gyms in Taipei)

I get the feeling the World Gym bubble will break eventually too.

1088 is correct. That’s how much I pay monthly. I didn’t haggle further since ~1000 nt is fine. Keep in mind I’m talking about Taipei, not sure of south.

I had a really good deal when I lived in Tainan for 788 for a 3 year contract. It was offered when they first opened in the east area. I lived a block away so I really used it. 1088 is also a great deal. Supposedly, I could transfer it to Taipei but that part was a nightmare. Cancellation fees are high.

I am considering to cancel my contract as I will moving to Kaohsuing. How was your experience cancelling with them ?

Painful. To transfer or cancel, check with your current branch and they can tell you your options.

Avoid world gym. I bet there are some local gyms that are pretty good with people working there that actually gives a shit and knows what they’re doing.

World Gym is such a joke.

Fitness Factory is far far better. I pay 988nt per month with them, great staff, gym doesn’t look like a casino with those shitty lights and carpets and their equipment is good.

World Gym told me I either had to pay cash for the entire year or use a credit card. I told them I have a debit card which they can debit the amount off per month but they refused. (Fitness Factory accepts debit cards without a problem)
So I said, what can I do?
Her answer: “Oh ask someone if you can use their credit card.”
My response: “Who would let me do that? People don’t just let you use their credit card.”
Her response: “Oh I am sure they will let you use it, it is not a big deal.”
My response: “Okay, let me use your credit card then.”
Silence …
Then I stood up and said goodbye and left their shitty gym.

I’m not 100% sure but I think it’s actually illegal to have lump sum payment of membership after California fitness did it and could not pay members back after going under.

If they ask for a lump sum payment, they are legally required to keep it in an escrow account until the monthly payments come due. The big chains (Fitness Factory and World Gym) do that, for small gyms I wouldn’t be so sure.

+1 on Fitness Factory.
I go to the Anping branch, and been a member for 5 years now. I pay $988 for a full access without time restrictions, and they never gave me this BS when I first tried to sign. Deep Breathing is also a joke as they tried to scam me, like the World Gym. (Asking for $2500NT a month. I said I only pay $988 at FF…what a joke.)

I’ll try to see if I can upgrade my membership to a black card since I have to renew soon.

There are loads of local gyms in Taiwan and smaller chains that do a good job. I used to go to 300壯士 in Ximen and they were absolutely awesome with great prices and brilliant facilities. Almost certain Tainan will have the same.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. I am waiting on getting a place in Kaohsiung. I am not very familiar with the city yet, so I don’t know where I’ll end-up. I might get a place somewhere around Zuoying station. So I will check what gyms are in that area first before trying to cancel with these guys.

I have got two people people on my credit card so I really need to get this cancelled properly. One of the ways that has worked for me in the past is taking a local with me to do all the talking. People generally try to bullshit you a bit less in that case but it mostly depends on the person that accompanies you and their willingness to fight for you.

I was initially thinking of transferring to another World Gym in Kaohsiung but I honestly don’t like overall atmosphere in World Gym. So I’ll definitely check out Fitness factory first. We are three people so hopefully they’ll give us a discount if we signup together.

I’ll recommend anytime fitness, the KS branches are good (although I live in Tainan, so I use the anping branch) and you can use them all over the world.

Fixed fee 1088 a month with year contract, 888 (or 988, I forget) with two. Can freeze if you go away (and don’t want to use abroad or whatever)

Their early termination policy is a pain (can only quit if there isn’t a branch within 30km of your new place, like wtf) but that’s common across their worldwide branches.

The worldgym is that one by the station? The closest anytime to you then would be on fuqian (I think that’s the name), just off the roundabout.

Take a look here. Great prices http://www.mandygym.url.tw/membership.html

Literally the exact same thing happened to me… I wonder if we dealt with the same person. Although I’m out in Luodong.

Granted I wasn’t witty enough to ask her to use her card.

Unfortunately the girl I talked to had my LINE (no idea why i gave it to her… ughh) and she would not stop texting me questions like:

“So did you get a friends credit card?”
“Can you ask your roommate?”
“Do you have co-worker who might have credit card?”

Finally I offered to pay cash and then she goes:

“Please find a credit card because I will not make commission if you use cash.”

WTFFFF

Some gyms popping up in Taipei you just pay NT$1 per minute no membership or anything required.

I dont believe this for a second… Where?

There’s 2. 1st fitness and soul fit

Here’s one, 1st Fitness I think, and there are more and more. I see them just walking around so much that I’ve quit making notes of them.
