I’m thinking about giving courses on computer use. At first I was thinking about doing private lessons in the confort of my, or the clients house, but someone suggested that I do mini-seminars.
Basically, over the years, I’ve noticed that many people need a crash course on certain technology topics. After getting the basics of something, they’ll take off with the same ease as a kid learning to ride a bike. The problem is getting those basics down.
The lessons/courses I have in mind are things like:
[ul][li]Keeping your computer happy and healthy[/li]
[li]Linux basics[/li]
[li]P2P/Filesharing 101[/li]
[li]Setting Up Your Blog[/li]
[li]Setting Up Your Website[/li]
[li]What is Open Source Software?[/li]
[li]Using XYZ ([Wordpress], [phpBB], [Textpattern], [punBB], etc.)[/li]
[li]Emulation Gaming[/li]
[li]Getting the Most Out of [Supermemo][/li]
[li]Saving Money with [Skype][/li][/ul]
etc. etc. etc, (the list goes on and on)
I could also teach more “advanced” stuff, like getting some of the different certifications (MCSE, A+, etc.)
What I have in mind now is making a website listing all the courses and people could sign up. When there were enough people interested in taking one, then a group course could start. Private lessons could be done at a persons leisure.
Another thought is I’d do a bimonthly thing somewhere. The topic would be posted and people could drop in and leave a donation or something.
After my work schedule is set I’m going to have a set time and place where the courses go down (I think once every 2 weeks.) Right now I’m thinking about doing them Sunday mornings at a Coffee Shop called Sphere or at my house. It will depend on what the topic is.
A list of topics will be coming soon. There isn’t going to be any charge, but a donation will be welcome.
I was thinking of teaching firing up a Media Arts Scoo.
People could learn:
Flash
Premiere
Photoshop
Anyone interested in workin with me? I was thinking like maybe we could teach Taiwanese and foreigners. Taiwanese love anything that’s a chain… so people that want to do it could apply for sort of a franchise thing.
Media arts would be cool. How PIMP are your skillz? I’d probably want to sit in on classes.
Here’s a brief update. I can rent out a private room at a place called Sphere. I’d bring my laptop and anyone that has one would be welcome to bring it. I’m going to prepare works sheets and stuff for the participants so they won’t have trouble remembering what was taught.
My wife helped me do the math and it’d be 500NT/person (for at least 2 hours) and it’d come with a drink (of your choice.) I’d need to have at least 6 people interested in whatever class it is I offer.
My schedule isn’t set yet, but it will be soon. More info coming soon…
I’ll tell you what my “plan” is for something like that. I want to eventually open a cafe that has a private room for holding classes in back, or on another floor. A couple computers and PIMP seating.
I figure I could hold classes of me own, or rent out the room. When I wasn’t teaching (which would be almost all the time I suspect), I’d just lounge around the cafe like I do at home, surfing the web and stuff.
I don’t want an actual school though. I want an lounge for Digital Ninjas (and those aspiring to be.) I could also hold “Game Club” any day of the week I wanted.
When I was living down south, I had a friend that owned an auto recycler. I also had a friend with a huge room in the middle of Nantao that was going to rent it to me cheap.
I was going to open a cafe that, instead of booths, was going to have vans with tinted windows that had been converted to private KTV rooms. All the lights would work, there’d be a stereo, and even a little exhaust fan to take out smoke… you get the idea. I moved. End of story.
Your cafe sounds like a great idea. You could have guest speakers come in and do workshops on various topics.
there are tons of bushibans and companies that teach computer stuff (from ms word to linux). i think your audience would be primarly foreign but why not after all?!
how about an internet coffeeshop? very profitable and fun. something they dont have in taipei is a console lounge where people can come and try plenty of games or play online.
excuse me but [/quote]
That’s why I added the wife part. She doesn’t want me wasting my time on free (and I couldn’t help but agree .)
I guess it’d be part that, but I want more. I like to sell board games (like the witch house) have Wifi, console games (if I’m going to be there all day, so are my 360, Wii and PS3), Magazines, Books and a few computers.
I want it to be more social that Internet cafe’s are. In those, people just plop in front of a computer for hours and leave.
[quote=“irishstu”]You realise that whatever your setup ends up being, you’ll have to use “PIMP” as some sort of cunning acronym for the name of the business, right?
Like “Professional Imaging, Multimedia and, erm… Pimpage”.[/quote]
Is pimping social? I would hope it could be somewhat profitable. I’d mostly want it for my own “personal” use. A place that comes to mind is the Living Room. It seems like the same idea, only built around music (check it out once if you haven’t.)
Yeah, I like the livingroom. The last livingroom I was in didn’t have 200nt bottles of beer though. I’ve always wondered what the deal was with the 400% markup thing.
I think the key to making any place survive is pricing. I’ve always wondered why businesses don’t have cheap beer. Do the gangsters kick their asses if they make their prices too cheap?
The place I imagine you running won’t make a lot of money, but it sounds like you don’t really care.
I think I know a lot, as you might have noticed from my other posts, but I have a really hard time getting paid for it.
They say there’s only two types of people, sales or service. Sales people like to take happy people and make them happier by selling them things. Service people like to find people that have issues and solve them which makes them happy.
OK, after some thought I’m going back to free. I’ll post the date of the first event in a few days (I’m thinking next weekend, or the weekend after next.) If you have a suggestion for a topic let me know, otherwise I’ll choose some general thing and post that along with the event thing. I’m thinking about the topic being blogs, focused around pimpin’ out wordpress (or moving from something else to wordpress.) I’d like to share all the shit I picked up over the last few weeks.
And for irishstu

Personal Instruction for Managing Personal Computers (How’s that?)
If enough people are interested, I’ll get a room rented. Otherwise we can just do it on one of the tables (max. 3-5.) Renting the room means a 1500NT minimum order. Tables = 150NT minimum per person.
